Re: Portrayal of Science in Entertainment

Aside from the aforementioned The Expanse , one of my favorite sci fi TV shows is Altered Carbon . It's kind of far out there as far as science goes, but the social commentary is interesting. I usually don't care much for shows that feature violent fight choreography just for the sake of well, watch...

I...haven't updated it in a little while. Mostly just routine spammer banning, and letting newly registered users post pics. The reason the board keeps running is because everyone (not just people who upkeep it!) keeps using it. And happy birthday, bystander.

Re: Bugs? Problems? Report them here!

Hi, I can't seem to get a verification email - I've tried to register three different email addresses, one gmail - checked the junk folders and main folders, asked for a resend of the verification email. Any ideas? Pulling my hair out here. Thanks! Jamie. Hi, I went ahead and manually activated the...

Back in the day Nitpicker helped me answer the question about how big a Hubble style mirror would have to be to resolve Proxima Centauri to just a few pixels: https://flic.kr/p/pFBTsR

We're talking kilometer range in size to resolve stars to at least a few pixels.

I finally have figured #ShutDownSTEM. How nice. But tomorrow STEM is back up and running. What are we going to be doing going forward to make STEM as available to people of color as for anyone else? It is way too easy to make a gesture like this and then move on and not make the promised difference...

Surprising response to today's APOD. Deleted a couple of posts that called this propaganda, because it is anti-science and a false claim that simple information regarding a virus is propaganda.

Another fun color astronomical puzzle is Neptune. Very, very few people have ever seen it directly, resolved through a telescope, but at least one person I know, Dr. Heidi Hammel, described it as more blue than cyan, and leaning more toward saturated and deep than pale. Another person with his own k...

Well, if we interpret color with our eyes, and our eyes never see green in any stars, I don't know what to say other than stars aren't green. oh darn! You're telling me that the light from 5,772 K yellow/green peaking star like the Sun won't even make my white sheets drying out on the clothes line ...

Well, if we interpret color with our eyes, and our eyes never see green in any stars, I don't know what to say other than stars aren't green. And if that makes me stupid then I'll take stupid.

Here's a picture of a star that ended up green.

Re: APOD: Journey into the Cosmic Reef (2020 May 18)

But our eyes can see green colors on a computer screen, and stellar color data can be captured in a way that isn't saturated to the point that it is white. Thing is, they never turn up green, ever. I don't really care how nitpicky you get about it. The sum of its parts just don't end up green.

Re: APOD: Journey into the Cosmic Reef (2020 May 18)

I can't even get them out of data, though. Like you'd have to either be using a specific set of filters to make them look green. Don't think you'd get green stars as long as you're using wideband visible filters. No... because wideband visible filters, by design, are intended to approximate the sam...

The only thing I find even remotely misleading about space images is that nebulas are probably a lot greener than we let it be. The blue just looks so much more appealing that [O III] emission is nearly always assigned a blue hue. Note, however, there aren't any green stars. Green stars? weird. Gree...

Ok, now that it's back up and running, I found the csv file which contains pretty much all the data anyone would need to create a new app. Curious to know if you have tried contacting Stephen Fantasia (I sure do recognize this name!) yet to see if you can simply get permission to load it as an ifram...
