Re: APOD: Mars at Closest Approach 2016 (2016 Aug 09)

I'm flabbergasted about the fact that the clouds didn't move in 9 years between 2007 and 2016. That's really shaking up all knowledge about the Martian atmosphere, isn't it? See this animation where I put the map from the video over the 2007 Space Telescope surface map. mars_animate.gif I tend to a...

It would take a soundstage about the size of a football field that could be completely depressurized (or the regolith wouldn't behave properly). The actors would still need the pressure suits and you would need to use cameras with about 60-90 fps film speed. Definitely doable though the soundstage w...

At first glance, it looked like he was reaching into a cooler for a beer... Drinking and driving on the moon for the first time... Seriously tho. Getting lost on the moon would be a serious problem. However, for a good view of Saturn's rings one really needs to be on a high inclination satellite like Siarnaq or Albiorix. Thanks for the interesting data on these two moons. It appears that these little guys are not tidally locked. For the scenario I imagined to arise, one would have to have a la...

Re: Timing of Mars Space Probe Launches

Got it. Mars is traveling through space at a little over 24KPS. So when the MGS arrived at a speed of 5KPS, while it was traveling significantly slower than Mars' solar orbit, it was traveling faster than Mars escape velocity and as such needed to reduce speed to 4KPS to ensure orbital insertion. S...
