Re: APOD: The Great Meteor Procession of 1913 (2013 Feb 09)

What would a collision like which occurred on Jupiter with Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 look like here on Earth if something similar happened? Am I way off base or is that what we are discussing here today? I mean a small object that broke apart and intersected the Earth's atmosphere in different location...

Re: APOD: The Arms of M106 (2013 Feb 06)

Gorgeous picture. I don't know why but every time I see a beautify spiral galaxy like this I imagine it to be the top (or bottom) of an apple-like structure; only I can't see the rest of the apple. Even though I know there is no downward (or upward) curvature, I still picture it in my mind. I've rea...

Re: APOD: LL Ori and the Orion Nebula (2013 Feb 03)

Sure looks like previous pictures (sorry I can't give specifics) that are described as a possible new solar system in the process of formation. A few days ago when Anthony had described protuberances as new star formation (in the APOD "Trifid Nebula") and the new star was leaving trailing ...

Yes. That's a great explanation. I would have never though of it in that light. A star; birth to adolescence.

Thanks Chris, Neufer, Anthony and especially those who put together one of the best APOD's I think I've seen. It makes an already spectacular photo even more wondrous!!!

Re: APOD: In the Center of the Trifid Nebula (2013 Jan 28)

Chis - Then I need a small star to put under my bed  .

Actually I have seen many APOD's with these protuberances and I can't imagine their function in star formation. I can't remember ever seeing an explanation. Any ideas?

I expect they aren't giant dust bunnies ears :)

Re: APOD: In the Center of the Trifid Nebula (2013 Jan 28)

Isaac Asimov wrote a book “The Stars, Like Dust” but I’ve never understood the comma in between? It seems to me “The Stars Like Dust” might have been more appropriate. This APOD seems to demonstrate that well. But I would never claim to say one of my favorite sci-fi and non-fiction authors got it wr...

Re: APOD: DNA: The Molecule that Defines You (2012 Aug 21)

It seems interesting to me that the spiral, coiling shape of the DNA molecule also generally resembles the turning, twisting movement our planet and moon form moving though space and time. Its helical structure seems to represent the "Movement that Defines Us". Just a coincidence?? :D Ron

Thank you all for your comments. What a great resource this is for us that have an intense curiosity about the universe we exist in but not the understanding to quite grasp it's structure and math that we use to verify that knowledge. …Yet  Ron

Re: Dimensions and Time

Oh no. Not another inane question from the "Astro-pharmacist without a clue." Earlier I had asked on another discussion topic whether black holes gravitationally attract just matter or potentially matter and space might also be consumed. There was some debate but, in the end, I don't think...

Re: Dimensions and Time

Good point! Given the varieties of black hole masses that have been detected throughout the universe, their central gravitational effects are more likely attributed to consumption. It's not likely the mass would end up functioning in two places at once. The underlying mechanism for the periph...

Re: Dimensions and Time

Reasoning with actual facts that fit into the currently known will eventually "fill in the voids" but it's not nearly as fun for us, ignorant, but enthusiastic participants with over active imaginations. I have a hard time excepting that the matter that enters a black hole is gone (but not...

Re: Dimensions and Time

One of the reasons I am so hung up on this time/dimension thing is that, in the investigation of dark matter, it seems reasonable to be only able to see matter if it exists in the observers current moment in time. The question then is ; Could dark matter only be something so simple as matter existin...

Dimensions and Time

Yesterday I posted an unacceptable post on APOD. I can't remember the exact post but it had something to do with viewing something far away (such as the Einstein Cross) with a telescope is like looking back in time. Also, why we do not see the small to large / large to small as a dimension? The idea...
