Thanks Andy. Like d_weye I had also thought the image showed a close-up of an active area, not the Sun's disc. It's not at all obvious that it shows the disc. The APOD mentions the WIND spacecraft. I've looked at several search result pages but I cannot find out what WIND stands for (if it is an acr...

Re: Star EGGs in the Eagle Nebula (APOD 22 Oct 2006)

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap061022.html Star eggs. Wouldn't it be fun to live long enough to see them hatch? Orin That made me smile. It's a lovely thought. I think they might be a bit overdone by the time we got there though! Star Trek warp speeds are needed now to give us a chance! :...

Hi BMAONE23. Thanks for giving the direct link to the image. I was surprised when what I typed in plain text in my posting of 2:11 pm came up as a URL, as I had not expected that! Interesting (or not!) that it was the only non-iced up or misty image that day. Shows what a bit of 'warm' Sun will do i...

Hi Harry I have given up trying to work out how to paste the image, so this link should help to see it:- http://www.arctic.noaa.gov/gallery_np.html That brings up the NOAA Arctic webcam site. Click on the 'All images from 2006' and then select date range 2006 Aug 18. Click display images and the ima...

Hi Harry Unfortunately the link I gave does not bring up the image now. I have tried to paste a copy of the image (which I have saved) but I do not seem able to paste it. If it is possible, could somebody please let me know how to add an image to a 'The Asterisk' post. I am guessing Img may be image...

There may be a Black Hole nearer than we think!

If it works (I hope it does) the link below should bring up an intriguing image that was taken today by a NOAA Arctic webcam. Well the sky has a hole and there is something black in it! :)

Hi hopeless ro. I also wondered what UE stood for. From a search I came across a webpage in the 'Spaceline - Covering the Past, Present and Future of Cape Canaveral' website that had a JUNO 1 Fact Sheet. In this it stated:- "Following scrubs on January 29 and January 30, a Juno I bearing the le...

I've just been looking at this APOD and I'm confused by something. The APOD title and in the explanation refer to 'East of Antares'. However, in the image in Johannes Schedler's website (brought up through the 'and expansive view' link) it refers to the image as being west of Antares. I've tried loo...

Strangers on Mars. (APOD 21 Jul 2006)

A little above and to the right of the large dark rock is a smaller somewhat rounded rock that appears to have a cross on it! That rock (it is seen better in the full sized image that is brought up through the "This view" link) seems to be composed of a light colour base and a darker top. ...

Hi orin stepanek.

The APOD of July 4th (Elliptical Galaxy Centaurus A from CFHT) was originally dated July 3rd (it still was even when I sent in my earlier post) but I notice it has now been corrected to July 4th.

Time catches up with us all, eventually! :)

I got well confused by the July 3rd date on what I felt sure should have been July 4th. I like BMAONE23's suggestions. They are much better (and funnier) than what I thought, which was that it was due to a United States Time Zone that I was not aware of. I never could fathom US Time Zones! :)

Well as long as it happends almost never, then ok, but I come here to see a picture, not spend an hour on video. They could just have posted a screenshot from nasa tv and a link to it instead. That would have been way better. It would keep it pictures and be as good as some of the pictures anyway. ...

GOSH Collaboration. APOD 2006 May 17.

I would be grateful if somebody could inform me what GOSH stands for. The GOSH link in the APOD brought up a Hubble NewsCenter webpage about the GRB's but it does not state what GOSH stands for and I have not been able to find out though a number of searches. Thanks.

I am also wondering what the line of white dots are.
As the line does not seem to be in the Hubble Heritage Project image that is brought up through an online link in the explanation I assume it is an image defect resulting from the post-processing of the original image.

I believe both venus and the moon were digitally removed from the image and the bright star was added in their place. The caption indicates that the glow on the water surface is moon shine. As for the large circle in the lower left of the image, I believe it was inserted to replicate a lens flare a...

1006 AD: Supernova in the Sky

I am confused as to what is what in the picture used for the APOD of April 30 2006 '1006 AD: Supernova in the Sky'. Where is the crescent Moon? If the very bright object is the Supernova then where is Venus? What is the large circular thing that looks like it could be an image defect? I appreciate t...
