I don't see the problem on XP with IE 7.0.5730.11 or Firefox 2.0.0.7
Are you up to date with Tools -> Windows Update

First things that come to mind are to check the page encoding and text size settings, and perhaps the web and plaintext fonts that you're using. I can't seem to replicate the problem, either, though. oO;

If I understand you correctly, you try to read the explanation first with some kind of tool that fetches the pic plus description (with the website as a better readable alternative)?
If that is the case, then you should probably contact the developer of that tool.

APOD Desktop Wallpaper Explanation still a problem...

Postby KerryBarger » Tue Oct 09, 2007 6:32 pm

I appreciate the feedback and tried to follow up on all of your ideas/suggestions, but this persistent glitch remains. (I am current on all Windows & IE updates.)

The problem/issue is that the "Explanation" that can be viewed [or closed again] with a single click on my APOD desktop wallpaper arrives daily with the title, "Astronomy Picture of the Day" covering/overlapping the first line of the explanation. I tried to copy the view of this in order to drop it here, but can't seem to copy or print this window on the desktop. I can highlight it with a right or left click of the mouse thereby creating a black background with white lettering, but the first line is covered with the title & not readable.

I can't reproduce it either, but I'm still willing to bet it's due to the malformed HTML on the APOD page. There's nothing you can really do about it except hope the editor reads about your plight and takes pity.

Hm, I have never seen that before. Guess I never cared to have it on my desktop. It's not open source so there's not much to look at. Sorry. :\

This is a persistent glitch !!!

Postby KerryBarger » Thu Oct 11, 2007 4:59 pm

I wrote to a friend of mine about this:

“David - Does your APOD desktop wallpaper look distorted like the pics below? If you're not using it, could you turn it on & check? I started a thread on the APOD discussion Forum, but no one seems to be able to help…”

He wrote back: “This is why I quit getting it due to the distorted image. I quit that a long time ago.”

APOD Backgrounder Crashing

Postby sirald66 » Tue Dec 18, 2007 1:22 am

http://nightskylive.net/software/apod/apod_inst.exe

The software had been running great for many many months; then one day an image was corrupted - so I directly deleted the .BMP and .JPG images from the APOD directory. Ever since, the program crashes.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling with a fresh download of the utility above, but with no luck. The Preferences utility works, but the main program does not. WinXP says the program had to shut down.

Are there some registry keys or something I can clear?

APOD Wallpaper

Postby DBrinson4 » Tue Jan 22, 2008 7:45 pm

Now I don't know about copyright laws and APOD, but I have an idea. What if someone with a greater knowledge than I could create a program where your computer could automatically download the APOD and post it as your computer's wallpaper - So you would have a new daily wallpaper.

You're in luck. It's already been done.

Well isn't that great. I figured I wasn't smart enough to come up with that idea on my own. Thanks a bunch!

Look at the first post :!:

lior wrote:A new APOD software is available for Astronomy Picture of the Day fans.

This software automatically brings Astronomy Picture of the Day to the desktop, along with the picture explanation. It is usefull, and also sets a new beautiful astronomy wallpaper every day. Of course, it is free, and does not contain Adware, Spyware etc'.

APOD software stopped working

Postby Moltentesseract » Wed Apr 23, 2008 11:48 pm

Hey, the APOD software that changes your wallpaper automatically has stopped working, and is still stuck on the fox nebulae. When it loads, i cant right click on the icon in the task tray. When i do, nothing happens.

I've tried reinstalling, but its still not working, any ideas?

Hi,

A couple of things:

1. A quick question - Does the APOD software work on Vista?

2. Someone was asking how they could know when a new version is released. Well, I use this service:

http://www.changedetection.com/monitor.html

to monitor web pages that don't change very often and don't have an associated RSS feed or email list. It seems to work very well.

APOD for your desktop?

Postby dreamer84 » Fri Jun 20, 2008 10:55 am

I just love APOD, it's (usually) awesome to look at and highly interesting to read the information provided!
What about a program setting current (or random) APOD as desktop image (maybe a selected region of it to fit screen resolutions...) and allowing to click or hover over it to get the description + links? That would possibly increase this great site's popularity even among ignorants like me  (ok, honestly, I study physics, but I'm rather the quantum theory guy...)
And what about merchandise, like a real calendar with last year's APODs?
Keep up the good work!

APOD Wallpaper program and VISTA

Postby kdo_au » Tue Jun 24, 2008 9:09 am

I recently installed the APOD program from http://nightskylive.net/software/apod/ and initially it seemed to run fine. Now however it does not refresh. Does anyone know if the program is compatible with VISTA and when it tries to refresh when set to Auto?

I'm using an alternative APOD wallpaper with Windows Vista. It is available here: http://sites.google.com/site/apodwallpaper/
