M8: The Lagoon Nebula -- New and Recent Submissions

Post by owlice » Wed Jul 28, 2010 6:32 am

Wikipedia wrote:The Lagoon Nebula (catalogued as Messier 8 or M8, and as NGC 6523) is a giant interstellar cloud in the constellation Sagittarius. It is classified as an emission nebula and as an H II region.

The Lagoon Nebula was discovered by Guillaume Le Gentil in 1747 and is one of only two star-forming nebulae faintly visible to the naked eye from mid-northern latitudes. Seen with binoculars, it appears as a distinct oval cloudlike patch with a definite core. A fragile star cluster appears superimposed on it.

Hi to all:
When you see the full size image, consider that the photo was taken with a zoom lens (70-200mm) to 200mm focal length with a Canon 20Da.
I added one more, with the same lens and camera, but now to 70mm of focal length.
Greetings
Cesar

There are many beautiful images here. I think my beauty price goes to Phillip L Jones. I love how he brings out amazingly subtle colors in the starry background onto which the splashy nebulae are superimposed. You can glean so much information about how much dust there is in various parts of the image, and how dust-reddened the background stars are. I love the patch of very faint red nebulosity at top center of the image. I wonder if this could be the remnant of the gas cloud that gave rise to M21, the cluster of hot young stars to the upper left of the Trifid Nebula. The size and shape of this red patch reminds me of Barnard's Loop in Orion.
