Mt Niles in the Twilight and Moonlight

Postby philhart » Fri Jun 22, 2012 11:01 am

These images of Mt Niles in the Canadian Rockies were taken on the night of 7th April, Easter Saturday, one day after Full Moon. The top image is 42 one minute exposures which started during evening twilight. The bottom image is 5 one minute exposures, just as the bright Easter Moon was rising in the east.

Half a year in one picture
The pinhole camera which took this solargraph was set up on one of the busiest streets of Eindhoven in The Netherlands. Over 3,5 million people in cars drove by during the half year exposure of this picture. Yet, there is no trace left of them in this solargraph. The next time people end up here in a traffic jam, they can comfort themselves with the thought that the street is actually quite empty.

More background information on this solargraph at: http://zonnekijkster.dse.nl/solargraph/ [nl+en]

Can you find the Moon? by fksr, on Flickr

Can you find the Moon in this picture?

37 hours after the new Moon and a few minutes after sunset an extremely thin crescent Moon is seen in the northwestern sky above Point Bonita near San Francisco, California.

In reality the crescent was very difficult to see; you really had to know where to look for it. Even though a smartphone astronomy app had told me that the Moon should be above and slightly to the left of the antenna on the hill in the foreground, it took me some ten minutes to spot it. This photo was shot with a telephoto lens, and the contrast has been enhanced.

Hello,

this is an Antares wide field, which I took a week ago in my holiday on the Roque de los Muchachos in La Palma, near GranTeCan. The minimalist camera equipment was a modified Canon EOS 450Da with an Canon EF 24-70mm L zoom lens @24mm on an Astrotrac traveller mount. Exposure time is 48x5min, in total 4h.

28 frames with plane streaks removed, hence you see startrail "gaps" because I removed some images

I posted the above earlier, as bonus, there is a iridium satellite flare 1/2 way up and 1/3 way in from LH side, this individual 2 frame composite & crop shows it clearly.

There is a 1 second pause between frames, as can be seen in the image, those flares last very briefly, usually just 3-5 seconds total to the naked eye, camera sensor will show longer.
I've seen just 1 -7mag flare and it was so bright and stunning!
Heavens-above has info to plan and capture them for those interested.

Taken with a Coronado PST40, Flea3 video camera and 2x barlow. 20 overlapping 30 second AVIs were captured to create the panels that were then stitched together to make this full disk mosaic.

Variable star in Andromeda

After reading an article about Variable star V1, I tried to find it on my Andromeda picture from 2 years ago. And I've got it! See below for all image details.

This star might be the most important in the history of Astronomy. Edwin Hubble discovered this star in 1923 using the 100 inch Hooker telescope at Mount Wilson, at that time the biggest telescope in the world.

Hubble used this variable star to determine that the Andromeda galaxy was beyond the borders of our own Milky Way, this finding revolutionized the way astronomers look at the Universe.
