As the weather forecast looks rather bad for the days ahead, I spent 3 hours tonight photographing the sky with a fisheye lens, hoping to catch some early Perseids.
I managed to get a total of 8 and a great number of flashing satellites that can sometimes be mistaken for meteors. Satellites typically stretch over several frames as they move slowly across the sky and the flash has a more symetrical light curve.
Stockholm might not be the best place to observe faint meteors from because of the light polution but this Perseid turned out really bright and colorful.

The show is getting more intense and my camera just made it capturing this bright Perseid meteor before the clouds came in. I've noticed it from my shadow since I was focusing the telescope at the moment of appearance...

The image was made with a Canon 5D and a Rokinon 14mm lens at f/2.8

Lets hope that tomorrow it will be clear in Greece and that will get another chance to observe the meteor shower!

Kind regards

Video allsky image of Perseid shower over Colorado, on the evening of August 11/12. This shows 85 Perseids (non-Perseids have been removed) captured between dusk and dawn. The count is a bit low since we're still in the monsoonal weather pattern, and there were scattered clouds throughout the night as well as some thin haze.

The shower peaked locally between 1am and 4am, and most of the captured meteors fell in that interval. Given the high radiant declination (just 30° from the pole), three hours just isn't long enough for the radiant to drift all that much, which makes its general location very obvious from apparent origin of the meteors in this image.

"Perseids over Joshua Tree"

The Perseids gave a great show these past couple of nights to all stargazers around the globe. I was fortunate to have clear skies everywhere I shot them. I started off friday morning in Joshua Tree National Park when I was coming home from a road-trip up the Northern Coast of California. I've been to Joshua Tree before, but never on a clear night. I was amazed at how bright the sky is on a moon-less night. The stars lit up the Mohave Desert naturally and made it easy to navigate the park with little or no light from my headlamp. It also took very little adjusting to bring out the details when processing this image.

Now onto the technical specs of this image...This is a composite image composed of 180 stills from a static timelapse sequence I shot aiming towards North Star where the constellation and radiant point "Perseus" was located about 40 degrees from. I shot at 20 second exposures with 1 second delay in between exposures. This allows you to create gapless startrails in your startrail images. The exposures were then stacked using a program called "StarStax" using the "lighten" mode which blended all 180 jpeg's into a single frame. I then browsed through all 180 images and used the selective tool to boost each individual shooting star so they would pop out of the startrail.
