This image was shot in the early hours of Halloween, Oct.31st.

As waiting for a forecasted CME to arrive I was out hunting for a great shot of the most fantastic astronomical phenomenon visible to the human eye from earth.
Although most of northern Scandinavia was cloudy, we were lucky to get a spot of clear skies over Tromsø, northern Norway.
Late October 30th a great auroral display appeared over Tromsø, northern Norway, which lasted way into October 31st and Halloween.

The display was one of the best I have ever seen! Multicolored auroras, curtains, rays, bands, needles, was all over the starry night for ours, well into Halloween day of Oct.31st.

My heart was beating fast as I did not want to miss this one, and I was panicking and frenetic searched for a good composition.
What is so excting and challenging with trying to shoot a good aurora photo is that you are NOT in control of where the auroras are in the sky, so making a good composition with the landscape is challenging!
However these old birch-trees worked well as arms reaching for that creature in the sky, and stretching for the skies I think they also make a nice connection between earth and space!

Sometimes aurora takes on shapes that makes your imagination go vivid. Not strange auroras are mentioned in so many folklores and myths.
I choose to call this shot "Creature", but what creature it is I leave up to the viewer :)

The hunt for the perfect aurora-pic still continues, but this may very well be my best shot as of today!
One thing is for sure, this wonderful astronomical phenomenon never cease to amaze me, and just the thoughts of the powers and amount of energy behind this display of light, makes you feel insignificant.

Very nice, Ole. I love the trees in the foreground and how their sharpness contrasts with the softness of the aurora.
Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.
