NGC 7331 in Visible and Infrared
Copyright: Douglas Gardner
http://www.remote-astrophotography.com

Here are two aligned images of the NGC 7331 galaxy. One image is in the visible band and the second is the visible plus an IR overlay from the Spitzer Space Telescope. All processing was done by me from FITS files.

When I look at galaxy images in the visible band I think of the dust lanes as non luminous but in the IR band the emission from the dust lanes jumps right out and NGC 7331 seems to have a lot of dust.

One image is processed from the visible band from the Kitt Peak 2.1M telescope. The second has an IR overlay from the Spitzer Space Telescope.

Example page to show switching between the two images with a mouse over:

Southern Albireo (aka 145 CMa)

This beautiful pair is well visible on urban skies even with small telescopes. The primary star is yellowish-orange and the companion is a pale bluish white. As increasing magnification the colours began to fade compare to the Albireo in Cygnus. This stars are not related and can be seen only as a pair because the perspective towards the Earth.

Taken from 110 kms north from Buenos Aires, Argentina using an Orion Optics UK 6 Inches Reflector, QSI 583 WS, SWNEQ6 Mount

Dark nebula Barnard 08
http://www.astrofotos.at
Copyright: Robert Pölzl

http://astrofotos.at/index.php?view=ima ... Itemid=134

Edward Barnard was a great astronomer. He discovered many astronomy objects and he made pictures of the dust in the milkyway - like this picture - Barnard 08 - located in the constelation "Comelopardalis"
This RGB image is a 6 part mosaic.

Best regards from austria

Celestial X of both hemispheres
Copyright: Petr Horálek (http://www.astronom.cz/horalek/?page_id=17)
This image shows view to the sky in January from both hemispheres. It ingeniously uses the compositions and timing to demonstrate different views in the Milky Way and the zodiacal light close to the Sun in the sky, which is located in both cases under the horizon. While the upper image was taken from Slovakia on 2 January 2016 after the sunset, the bottom image just before the dusk in the early Chilean morning on 26 January 2015. Except the columns of the zodiacal light you can also notice reddish or pink H II regions emission nebulae in the visible plane of our Galaxy. On the northern hemisphere, the most noticeable is NGC 7000 or The North America Nebula (close to the upper right corner), while on the south – in completely opposite position – you can find a rose-shaped Carina Nebula. Both images were captured with same equipment in almost the same season, just with a year difference between first and the second one. Unfortunately, the northern part (from Slovakian village Oravska Lesna) is pretty much disturbed by the light pollution unlike the southern part, captured from ESO’s Paranal Observatory, which is located in incredibly naturally dark spot of the Atacama desert.
