Crescent Moonrise over Budapest
Copyright: György Soponyai

On 5th February 2016 the dawn sky promised a wonderful phenomena with the crescent Moon, Venus and Mercury on the Eastern horizon. However the clouds didn't allowed me to photograph the planets, the "remaining" scene with the rising Moon herself and the waking Budapest in the foreground was still marvellous. The bank of river Danube with the Chain Bridge (Lánchíd - the oldest bridge of the city) is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Planetary Conjunction above Corfiot sea
Night landscape before the dawn above the island and the sea of Corfu, with the waning crescent Moon, age 27 days old, shines above all at 378694km away.
Just under and right is our sister planet Venus with magnitude almost -4.0 shines at 1,37AU away almost above the old Fortress of Corfu.
And just above Igoumenitsa in the red horizon little Mercury shines almost at 0mag 0,97AU away from as.

Lords Of The Winter Nights Piazza Duomo Syracuse - Unesco World Heritage Site
http://www.dariogiannobile.com

Jupiter, Moon and Sirius, Lords of The Winter Nights, paint their trails in the sky of Ancient Syracuse. It includes the old city’s foundation, Ortygia, built by Greeks from Corinth in the 8th century BC. The site of the city, which Cicero described as ‘the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of all’, retains vestiges such as the Temple of Athena (5th century BC, later transformed to serve as a cathedral), a Greek theatre, a Roman amphitheatre, a fort and more.

I did not want to miss the last day of the planetary conjunction with the Moon, but I was worried I would not be courageous enough to get up when the alarm would ring around 6am. So I solved this problem by staying the whole night out, taking pictures of deep sky objects with the telescope. It was a fairly cold night on the shores of Monroe Lake (Bloomington, IN), but totally worth it. In the morning, the 5 planets lined up were joined by a very thin crescent of moon.

With the Moon taken through the telescope at the same time:

The sky was getting really bright, so I add to enhance a little bit the contrast around the stars in Photoshop to make them pop out. I don't like having to do this sort of things, but it was the only way to see the stars and the planets while looking at the full panorama on a small screen.

The Toby Jug Nebula IC2220

Post by strongmanmike » Mon Feb 08, 2016 12:03 pm

IC2220 is a cloud of gas and dust illuminated from within by a star called HD 65750, a red giant star about 5 times more massive than our Sun.
The nebula sits in a complex region of very faint molecular dust in the southern constellation of Carina. The Toby Jug shape was first coined by David Malin, Paul Murdin and David Allen when they noticed the strong resemblance to the once popular china jugs: http://www.worldcollectorsnet.com/features/tobyjugs/
