One of the most beautiful nights that i've ever had in New Zealand. Lake Tarawera is just an amazing place to be to watch the milkyway rise.
I usually read on the location that i go to shoot, but this visit was not planned so, did not read much. Only to come back home and realize, what is hidden behind this beautiful view. The eruption of Mount Tarawera on 10 June 1886. Although it's been years now, knowing what happen makes you feel sad. This image is dedicated to all those people, who were unfortunate.

The image shows a beautiful today with milkyway rising over lake Tarawera , air glow and a violent past of the mount Tarawera eruption.

Equatorial sky: From Big Dipper to the Southern Cross
Copyright: Petr Horrálek (http://www.astronom.cz/horalek/)

While staying at Maba village on equatorial Indonesian island Halmahera in this March, I realized one amazing fact. This place with latitude only 40’N, is the best one to capture both of commonly known „pointer“ showing the celestial poles. As the north celestial pole can be found by stars of the Big Dipper (pointing to the star Polaris), the south pole is possible to find by the Southern cross. Check this on annotated image version. Both of these celestial „shapes“ were perfectly visible in the late night of 4th March 2016 from incredibly dark place of the Maba beach, where I was taken by such a nice local citizen Mr. Hardi, followed by his uncle Mr. Haruna. Both of them came on the beach and sat on a log of dry wood, nearby a fading campfire. Apart from both celestial shapes, the sky was enriched by rising center of the Milky Way („Miett“ in local Maba language) with bright „red“ planet Mars and a bit fainter Saturn close to the bright red star Antares in the Scorpius. Strong lights on the right come from the village, partly disturbing view to the southern Milky Way with pink Carina nebula. On the left, the light belongs to far nickel mining company. But not only artificial lights were captured. Red and green „flames“ in the sky are caused by natural atmospheric airglow. Beautiful Mobon Island behind the guys completes this calm but memorable view as a foreground in the Jiko Mobon Gulf (Gulf around Mobon Island). More info and images in better quality can be found here: http://www.astronom.cz/horalek/?p=2281.

Gum 23.

Located in the constellation of Vela at a distance of around 5000 light years. Often over looked as a target due to the nearby Vela SNR, some of which can be seen in the lower left of the frame. Integration time of 47.5 hours.

Pale blue dot!

Post by conemmil » Sun Mar 27, 2016 12:22 pm

I've created this image to show the scale of the Solar System bodies during the total solar eclipse from Indonesia. The perspective is astonishing! I've seen nine total solar eclipses so far but the view of the large prominence with the unaided eye was just remarkable! I can't believe how lucky we were having this big prominenece right next to the last Baily's Beads.
I wish that more people would get the scale of things on our universe and maybe then realise how important is to keep our spaceship healthy and operable. Its the only one we have after all!

Propper motion of M51

Choose any area of the sky such as occupying M51, the spiral Whirlpool Galaxy. If we compare for example the marked area with an image of the same field taken by DSS (Digitized Sky Survey) 60 years ago we can see how some stars look that they have been displaced. Actually, all the stars move.
The apparent stillness is the product of the enormous distances that separates us from them, something that makes the movement can be perceived only by comparison of different observations separated by long periods of time.

DSS image is of the Schmidt telescope 48-inch at Monte Palomar (CA, USA) only one frame in April 8, 1956. My image is a stack of 30x300s the last year in March 29, 2015 (59 years apart)
