Aurora borealis photobombing the Big Dipper over the smokey Canadian rockies

In the months of July and August, British Columbia in Canada has known some of its most destructive wildfires, spreading across hundreds of miles and ravaging entire ecosystems. Winds bore the smoke and ashes up high and far away, but mostly to most of Alberta because of the dominant South-west-originated stream. As I drove up to Pyramid Lake in Jasper National park on July 17th to try and get a shot of the much anticipated solar storm, a brilliant display started around midnight, local time, with majestic and colorful curtains spreading across the night sky. As the beams passed over Pyramid mountain, it completely photobombed the constellation of the Big Dipper, passing low on the horizon at this time of night and year. The smoke, very conspicuous in the image, gave me enough time to get the shot before engulfing the whole area. You could easily mistake the aurora for actual flames producing the smoke, a feature that gives a very special atmosphere to the shot!

Sony a 7rII + Samyang 135mm f/2, single shot.

The return of the hunter

Credits: Adrien Mauduit

www.adphotography-online.com

The return of cooler temperatures has not gone unnoticed in the Alps region in France, and with it, shortening days, but more importantly the return of our beloved winter milky way. If you are a H-emission lover, the winter sky is for you: from the north-american nebula to the Orion belt, it is a feast for your camera. Too faint to be seen with the naked eyes, these nebulas can be enhanced with a special filter or by modifying your camera. Either way, it promises great sightings again this season. I took this pano shot last year in Denmark on Høve strand as an aurora was also making its appearance.

Conjunction of 3% Moon, Venus & Zaniah over the Swiss Alps

Credits: Adrien Mauduit

Early morning was a beautiful sight to behold. The 3% crescent moon rose along Mars (too high for the picture), Venus, which was close to Zaniah, a fainter star. I was hoping the moon would rise more to the west so that I could get some snow with it, but these beautiful mountains East of the 'Dents du Midi' in Switzerland will do! The shot is taken from Gex in France.

Hunting the Hunter

Credits: Adrien Mauduit

In this shot composed of 20 light frames (no calibration frames), I wanted to capture the the detailed nebulosity of the Orion complex rising above the Swiss Alps on October 26th 2017. I went up the the Emosson Damn near the French border to capture it. My primary goal was to take time-lapse sequences of the constellation at 135mm where you can see the complex rising, and it is very challenging because you have to know you settings, gear and skills to get results like that in single frames. A video is also available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sREtfg ... pdw03c010c
The challenge was to get the H-alpha emission using a tracker while shooting in a very light polluted area (Italy, France nearby)

Northern Light Cascade

Credits: Adrien Mauduit

I have never witnessed such bright auroras in my whole life. Last September, as the solar storm was still raging on, the particles from the sun sparked a G1 strong event that brightened the Icelandic sky. When I say brightened, I mean literally. The particles lit up the gas molecules so much that it blew out all my highlights, and since I mainly take time-lapse, it was impossible to change the settings, but it gives you an idea of what the settings are for 'normal' aurorae. It is definitely on my top 3 displays ever.
I went to Thingvellir national park to shoot. One after the other, the aurora started with a typical arc growing from the north and moving southwards, and then exploded into pillars and coronas. In total, I witnessed 4 major explosions and coronas, as you can see on the pictures. The whole landscape was lit.

It looks like the aurora is emerging directly from the water fall, acting as a mirror. While the sky is literally peppered with white and green flames, it shed loads of light on the scenery revealing the waterfall right beneath it.

Draconids and aurora at 40000 feet

Credits: Adrien Mauduit

On the night between the 7th and the 8th (last night while my European friends were sleeping), I was flying above the Atlantic ocean at around 40000 feet from Canada to Europe when the aurora decided to show at around 1:00 am LT (South of Greenland). Our route was far south to really see the aurora and the moon was still washing everything out, but I always take the north window seat and have my cameras ready anyway. Even against all odds, a beautiful cyan arc and eventually pillars appeared, and much anticipated guests also made their appearance: most likely Draconid meteors. One conclusion to be drawn: you can always see tons of stuff on a plane at night, you just have to look out the window and get the window seat!

Windmill and Galaxy, Human and Nature

i toke the picture in a small city south of China, Oct 21. There are many windmills on the top of the mountain, and I saw the beautiful galaxy in the sky. now, pollution is a big problem in China, windmill power generation is a good way to protect our nature.

The turbulent Rosette Nebula processed utilizing the Hubble SHO palette. 12 hours of total acquision through Ha, OIII and SII filters from light-polluted skies, revealing fine gas and cloud details. One of the gems of the fall and winter sky!
