A brief rotation of Monte Olimpus

Post by astroavani » Fri Jun 29, 2018 7:12 pm

Now, a year after being selected among the 10 finalists in 3,800 entries in the Royal Observatory Greenwich contest, I finally decided to post this photo on Astrobin where it will have greater visibility.
Photo taken in the opposition of 2016 in a 30 day interval between the first and last photo.

Turbulent nature of the Jellyfish Nebula

Found in the constellation Gemini, the Jellyfish Nebula, also designated IC 443, is a large supernova remnant. The emission of the nebula is due to the excitation of hydrogen atoms as the rapidly expanding shell collides with the surrounding molecular gas. This hydrogen-alpha image shows the turbulent nature of the nebula as the resultant shock wave expands. Image taken with a Takahashi CCA-250 f/5 astrograph and QSI683wsg CCD camera (Astrodon 5nm H-alpha filter) on a Paramount ME in Mayhill, NM on the nights of the 23rd, 24th January 2018. Total of 7 hr exposure (21 x 1200 sec lights @ -20 degrees C; 24 darks; 128 bias; 128 flats). Processed in PixInsight 1.8.5.1353 Ripley (x 64).

Hello,
A 5 hours LRGB with the ASA Richtey-Chrétien 40' of Chilescope.
The full is here https://www.astrobin.com/full/353776/0/?nc=iotd
Have a look to the ring around PGC 724525, the nearest small galaxy left side.
Hope you enjoy !

Tadpole Galaxy (Wide). KG Observatory.

https://www.astrobin.com/352674/
I love this wide-angle portrait of the Tadpole Galaxy and friends! There are two spiral galaxies and an elliptical galaxy at what appears to be the same distance from us as the Tadpole Galaxy, so they may belong to the same "Local Group". The bright blue foreground star is HD 145223, a star of spectral class A2.

Ann
Thank you Ann and thank you for the additional information about Tadpole's friends! I look forward to sharing additional images from our new backyard observatory.
