Should we place an "inactivity time limit" on these mysteries before someone can automatically take it upon themselves to post a new one? If so, is one week sufficient, or should we allow for more time? Thoughts? - RJN

i think there should be such limit, and other limits.
for example the poster should give a clue, hint or another crop each 4 or 5 days. then after one month if no one asked for more time to work on the mystery, we go for next one; but if some one asked for -say- 1 week, we can wait another week and also there will be clues again.

we don't have any mystery now, right? who is responsible to send next one?

I'm with Amir, I think a week is too short. Maybe hints every 4 or 5 days up to a month after which it is considered unsolved and the poster gets a temporary specialized rank of SMO Stumper or something.

Who posts the next one? The poster of the unsolved SMO? I think it should be.

No one solved this one, wonderboy posted the answer. Should he post the next?

BTW: wonderboy has been inactive since 6/9, and no posts since 6/6.

Well, from what little i know about stuff, I'd guess that it is most likely a moon of either Saturn or Jupiter, but perhaps Uranus is involved?

I have no idea of what you are speaking of, but you mention a double slit, but show 3 slits. Is that part of the puzzle?

27 ? What the heck is Uranus doing - planting moon seeds? How's a little bitty planet like Uranus handling 27 moons? You'd think that would have destroyed it's orbit a long time ago. Yep, Space sure is Strange!!

Obviously Uranus is not as small as you think. It's still a gas giant, after all.

Is it possible that you have never been acquainted with the Uranus joke? It is not particularly funny but very popular in certain circles. The sole point is that Uranus may be (mis?)pronounced as "your anus", and apparently any reference however oblique to orifices of excretion counts as inherently funny.

One would expect that to get old quickly in an astronomy forum, but no such luck, it seems.

Most jokes lose their humor when you have to explain them. Even still, I would agree this is rather sophomoric.

Yes, the hole Uranus joke has worn kinda thin. Actually i thought there might have been another joke or two that i hadn't heard of yet floating around and thought I'd missed it. See what happens when you get involved with gaseous planets, you get Belching at both ends and get no-where, unless of course, some-one lights a match. Then you just may find that the joke is on you

AHaha, it was stupid, I didn't even mean to make it a joke, it just came out. I'm stupid sometimes so you have to forgive me.

Well, now that thats all out of our systems, I guess #36 is Europa, one of jupitors moons. I've seen seen something that looks very similar to the picture recently, and Jupiter came to mind when i first saw it and i think has some color just like the mystery picture.

The object of the game is to identify the APOD from which the crop came.
