I am uncertain as to the proposed strength of this event when compared to throw Carrington event. It has been proposed that a Carrington class event would likely effect all the Earth orbiting satellites, even those within the strongest part of the magnetic field, by frying the electronics packages similar to the Western Union wires during the past event. Since the 2012 CME was a direct hit to the Stereo A satellite and it still functions, either ALL satellites need to be similarly hardened or the event wasn't as strong as thought.
