The Astrophysics Source Code Library: New codes welcome

Postby RJN » Sat Jul 24, 2010 8:01 pm

If you know of a code that might be well placed here, please mention it as a reply to this topic. This could be your own code, one written by others and posted to arXiv.org, or something else entirely. For each code suggested, we will have a look and, if appropriate, add the code to the list in the future. - RJN

Browsing arXiv.org > astro-ph today (found here: http://arxiv.org/list/astro-ph/new),
I see the following code listed here: http://arxiv.org/abs/1007.4968 :

The third version of the AMBER data reduction software

Authors: Malbet et al.

(Note: anyone can browse through the day's listings and post any new codes found as a reply to this Topic.)

Surely you should link to the cfitsio library at GSFC?

http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/fitsio

Also, a separate link to the FITS image compression tool, fpack:

Rob,
We will post your codes to the list eventually. Currently, we are trying to figure out how to post a new code in this phpBB software while keeping the rest of the codes in alphabetical order. We will solve this eventually!

CFITSIO and FPACK have been added, and codes now stay in alpha order in the forum.

Another recommendation: setting up categories for libraries by language. For example:

Python:

IDL:

IDLAstro includes a further compilation of links to IDL libraries:

Xephem (open source) has useful libraries. (They are the basis of PyEphem)

Package for the Interactive Analysis of Line Emission (PINTofALE)
http://hea-www.harvard.edu/PINTofALE/

IDL package to analyze high-resolution spectra. Hooks into CHIANTI, SPEX, and APED atomic line emissivity databases. Also contains several utility programs of general applicability.

Thank you! PINTofALE is in the library on page 2 here: viewtopic.php?f=35&t=20389&p=128160#p128160

If there is something in the entry that needs to be fixed, please let me know; thank you!

You should have the FLASH code up
http://flash.uchicago.edu/website/home/
There description is kind of crummy but its one of the more powerful hydro/MHD/AMR/MPI codes out there

Thanks very much! It's been added and is here: viewtopic.php?f=35&t=23131

I welcome suggestions for improving the title of the thread; the software limits the number of characters in the title, and I am sometimes at a loss as to how to deal with it.

I'd suggest adding PLPlot (http://plplot.sourceforge.net/), a plotting package which takes inspiration (and some syntax) from PGPlot. PGPlot hasn't been updated in 10 years, whereas PLPLot is undergoing active development. I'm in the midst of switching over since it's increasingly hard to compile PGPlot on modern linux distributions.

Thanks for the tip! Do you know whether PLPlot has been described in a paper/used to generate research results?

I've written a package for different astronomical and astrophysical purposes. The main web page is at http://conga.oan.es/~alonso/doku.php?id=jparsec. They are a set of tools for astrophysical research in star formation and radioastronomy, developed in Java so that it can be used in any operating system. Main tools are SEDFit and DataCube, and a short description is included in the web page. The science section of my page contains a link to my thesis pdf with a detailed description (but in Spanish). Feel free to add it to your database if you find them useful.

Hi,

You might consider adding the cosmological Fisher Matrix toolbox Fisher4cast:

Hi,

Please consider adding Fosite - a 2D advection problem solver - to your list.
You can find it here
http://fosite.sourceforge.net/
and
http://www.astrophysik.uni-kiel.de/inde ... 35&lang=de

It is in constant development at the CAU Kiel. We would be happy about any collaboration.
Cheers,

Suggestion for a new code

Postby ChristerSandin » Mon May 28, 2012 12:38 pm

Hi,

I think that the following two codes should be suitable to add to your directory:

o L.A. Cosmic
Cleans single images of cosmic rays using an edge-detection algorithm.

Pieter G. van Dokkum (Yale)
and also J. Bloom (UC Berkeley), who wrote the IDL version of the code.

http://www.astro.yale.edu/dokkum/lacosmic/

http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2001PASP..113.1420V

o DCR
Cleans single images of cosmic rays using a fast algorithm that is based on image statistics.

W. Pych

Hi there,

I am a co-author of a simulation analysis package called pynbody -- perhaps it could be included on the list? You can find it here: http://code.google.com/p/pynbody/

Thanks,
