[quote="APOD Robot"]Image Bright Planetary Nebula NGC 7027 from Hubble
a familiar icon that could be the basis for an informal name. Please feel free to make suggestions -- some suggestions are being recorded, for example, in an online APOD discussion forum.

looks like an orville redenbacher corn kernel in the midst of popping in the microwave

i suggest ngc7027 be called the "Popcorn Nebula"

The "Meerschaum Nebulae" .
It' an intriguing, better yet, fascinating object (picture). Reminds me when I was young swimming underwater seeing see-foam floating with faint sunshine halo through it!

There was a request for names: it reminds me of a character from a classic Nintendo game. Kirby.

vansinoz wrote:"Casper Nebula" - as in Casper the friendly ghost
Haven't seen/held a "Casper the Friendly Ghost" comicbook for over 40years. Don't know if its still in existence. But when I saw the nebula, that's the first image that sprung to mind: Ghostly, powerful, gigantic, swerving and changing shape as it swoops accross the universe. I thought I was the first to come up with the "Casper" (as in friendly ghost) name and only now realised that many had posted the same Realised now my post is on the 43 page only and now looking back at all the previous posts). Only problem with "squirrel" is that it has no tail and looking at a 'flying squirrel' their shapes are more rectangular as opposed to "casper" where the 2 ghostly legs, 2 ghostly arms and head is clearly destinguishable. Pillow and Marshmellow only relate to the inner part of the nebula while Casper is descriptive of the entire nebula. In memory of all the pleasure that Casper created when I was a child, he is deserved of having his name immortalised. :D

Um, I think the author was thinking of star trek, the badge... the Federation Nebula? No? But it depends on the imaging how it looks, so, whatever...

The Gestalt Nebula (Self evident)

The Congressional Nebula (Asymmetrical inflationary turbulences distorting symmetrical forms)

The Tin Foil Hat Nebula (Say no more)

The Foaming Beer-Head Nebula (It's an Oz thing)

The Pensive Old Man Nebula (A mild stretch of the imagination...but he's there, slightly stooped right in the middle)
