APOD: Lucid Dreaming (2016 Apr 04)

Post by APOD Robot » Mon Apr 04, 2016 4:06 am

Image Lucid Dreaming

Explanation: Is this the real world? Or is it just fantasy? The truth started with a dream -- a dream that the spectacular Seljarlandsfoss waterfall in southern Iceland could be photographed with a backdrop of an aurora-filled sky. Soon after a promising space weather report, the visionary astrophotographer and his partner sprang into action. After arriving, capturing an image of the background sky, complete with a cool green aurora, turned out to be the easy part. The hard part was capturing the waterfall itself, for one reason because mist kept fogging the lens! Easy come, easy go -- it took about 100 times where someone had to go back to the camera -- on a cold night and over slippery rocks -- to see how the last exposure turned out, wipe the lens, and reset the camera for the next try. Later, the best images of land and sky were digitally combined. Visible in the sky, even well behind the aurora, are numerous stars of the northern sky. The resulting title -- given by the astrophotographer -- was influenced by a dream-like quality of the resulting image, possibly combined with the knowledge that some things really mattered in this effort to make a dream come true.

That gets an "ooh" and an "aah" from me. It might have been less work if there was a third person dedicated to taking the photos ... but I suppose three's a crowd.

Fantastic pic imo. Did they not think to bring a third person instead of climb over wet rocks to check the camera? :)

APOD Lucid Dreaming April 4

I really don't care for these composite photos that are just... stupid. I realize many of the NASA PODs use computer enhancements so we can see what is not visible, but this one is just Photoshop on Redbull.

Just my two cents.

I too have no great love for these conjured up images. The natural world is much more beautiful and awesome in almost every respect. I seldom even use HDR.

As for the wet lens/dew point issue; If there is no electric outlet where I can use a hairdryer, I will sometimes try some of those chemical hand warmers wrapped loosely around the lens with string. It is best to start with a warm lens. But in this case the wetness could be from the waterfall mists. Maybe try an umbrella.

Of course, in almost all cases, an HDR image is a closer representation of what the eye perceives than any single exposure.

I think my favorite part about this APOD are all the Queen references.
Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.

Yes, what was that all about? I guess the image was composed of a little high and a little low?
(Both geometrically, and in the HDR sense.)

Brian May, former lead guitarist for Queen, is a respected astrophysicist.
Know the quiet place within your heart and touch the rainbow of possibility; be
alive to the gentle breeze of communication, and please stop being such a jerk.

Brian May and Brian Cox should team up for a song! :D
Also a song that is in no way related to Brian Cox at all whatsoever.

And of course, before Photoshop we never tweaked the exposure during the print stage. If only we could develop a sensor that would read our minds and capture what the mind says we saw we would not need any help from a camera, lens, or software. Awesome sight!

The "real" image- that is, the one you get when you click on the main page image- is not annotated.

Ah. I didn't remember the lyrics, and I didn't click the Is it just fantasy link. (I was trying to find Queen Cassiopeia in there, but... no.)
