APOD: Cirrus over Paris (2016 Jun 22)

Post by APOD Robot » Wed Jun 22, 2016 4:07 am

Image Cirrus over Paris

Explanation: What's that over Paris? Cirrus. Typically, cirrus clouds appear white or gray when reflecting sunlight, can appear dark at sunset (or sunrise) against a better lit sky. Cirrus are among the highest types of clouds and are usually thin enough to see stars through. Cirrus clouds may form from moisture released above storm clouds and so may herald the arrival of a significant change in weather. Conversely, cirrus clouds have also been seen on Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Titan, Uranus, and Neptune. The featured image was taken two days ago from a window in District 15, Paris, France, Earth. The brightly lit object on the lower right is, of course, the Eiffel Tower.

My ESL-understanding of English tells me that "conversely" means "on the contrary" and should not have been used here. The correct sentence adverb might be also, likewise, furthermore, moreover.

It is definitely a peculiar choice of word. I may be reaching too far, but it occurs to me that observing cirrus clouds on other planets is observing them from "above", rather than observing Earthly cirrus from "below", so there is at least some form of reversal to justify the use of "Conversely". Also/likewise/furthermore/moreover, the appearance of clouds on other planets does not herald changes in weather on Earth (although in some cases it might point to Earth's climate in the distant future).

Cloudy everywhere: today's ESPOD is also clouds: http://epod.usra.edu/blog/ but, oddly, I find today's APOD Parisian clouds even more striking!

Probably just subliminal advertising for Independence Day: Resurgence.

How boring would life be if we didn't have weather to change things up? Just like urban renewal our atmosphere has to change periodically. Thankfully the Earth's orbit is tilted. Of course some places get pretty consistent weather. Just ask an astronomer in Seattle.

What a gorgeous photo.

The colors of the sunset, the sky, and the clouds are reminiscent of the red, white and blue of the French flag billowing in the wind.

My friend Alcor, who sometimes posts here, told me that he didn't see a duck, but rather Superman in the cloud cover at left. I can see what he means. I can make out the shape of a man seemingly just hanging there in the clouds, foot hanging down, looking something like this. Minus the bright colors, of course.

It's a cloud, it's a duck, it's Superman!

Beautiful picture! This ridiculous set of rules for photographing the lit Eiffel Tower at night may be of interest. I'm no lawyer, but i would argue that the Eiffel tower was just there (situational and in public space), and not the primary object of interest. http://artlawjournal.com/night-photos-e ... copyright/

To me. the cloud on the left reminds me of the dark nebula B174, which can be seen in this image by Bernhard Hubl. :D

Also the video in the District 15 link is very relaxing and soothing! It reminds me of the following song:
