APOD: Color the Universe (2016 Jul 19)

Post by APOD Robot » Tue Jul 19, 2016 4:06 am

Image Color the Universe

Explanation: Wouldn't it be fun to color in the universe? If you think so, please accept this famous astronomical illustration as a preliminary substitute. You, your friends, your parents or children, can print it out or even color it digitally. While coloring, you might be interested to know that even though this illustration has appeared in numerous places over the past 100 years, the actual artist remains unknown. Furthermore, the work has no accepted name -- can you think of a good one? The illustration, first appearing in a book by Camille Flammarion in 1888, is used frequently to show that humanity's present concepts are susceptible to being supplanted by greater truths.

I've long wanted to see a version of this picture in which the 21st century human is looking the other way -- from the realm of abstract thought, rediscovering with astonishment the wonders of the natural world.

Cosmic latte - I'm just saying!

Me being me, I of course hoped that the universe would turn out to be more blue. But all things considered, it is probably for the best that the universe is sort of beige. A blue universe would be more violent, more filled with supernovas, for example.

And while I don't drink latte myself, I sympathize with those who. It's not too bad to think that we live in a sort of milky universe, in a minute part of it called the Milky Way. Ours is a universe that has produced coffee, milk and humans, and that is not so very bad!

He got the phase of The Moon right....and actually it is not all that bad as we know more now... and STILL have inaccurate "artists conceptions"....

It depicts...I believe... a man trying to "pierce the veil", and glean the "Secrets of the Universe"... which man has been doing since.... forever.... not really such a bad depiction....as "realms beyond what we can merely see".....very imaginative... and quite appropriate for the time.... We are still doing this.... M Theory anyone? 11th Dimension?

Name for Illustration? "Curiosity".....

Although the artist is not known, the vision is based on Ezekiel’s text from the Old Testament. A wheel within a wheel.

This is very much a part of the history of astronomy, unless you want to believe that astronomy as a science just suddenly appeared one day without any previous effort. It's also interesting to many people.
