It looks to be just south of New Zealand in the South Pacific Ocean

It's the ocean!!
Re: APOD: Home from Above (2010 Nov 15)
I say part of the indian ocean and the arabian sea. You can see the tip of Ethiopia in the bottom left corner of the top left window and above it, you can see the shape of Arabia.
Re: APOD: Home from Above (2010 Nov 15)
Looks like golf of mexico with mexico in the lower window and north america further north
Re: APOD: Home from Above (2010 Nov 15)
It's the North Atlantic, looking toward Baffin Island and Hudson Bay.
Re: APOD: Home from Above (2010 Nov 15)
I think that it is the outside of the planet Earth.
Re: APOD: Home from Above (2010 Nov 15)
I believe the red sea and sinai peninsula are in the upper left window. Hard shot.
Re: APOD: Home from Above (2010 Nov 15)
I think that the image below the woman on the picture is a part of Mexico.
Re: APOD: Home from Above (2010 Nov 15)
Must be the Atlantic, to the upper left you can clearly see the Cubs losing.

I wonder what that could be.owlice wrote:I have no idea where around the world Dr. Dyson was. I'm wondering what this, cropped from the full-sized image, is, though.
And here's a crop from the image on the APOD page; smaller, so there's more of the image in the crop.
What is going on there?
Also curious is the rectilinear form in the clouds below the object/smudge.
Extra visible in the full size image.

Yes, I find it very curious, too! I enlarged the image 400% hoping for enlightenment, but got only a blocky picture that didn't tell me anything new instead.sea otter wrote: I wonder what that could be.

no no one could, that's impossible, there is no land mass to speak of.
Re: APOD: Home from Above (2010 Nov 15)
The Q link brought me to a video of the band Max Q (astronaut band) doing a cover of a popular song. I was surprised by this, and also by the genre.
In the Wiki article "Gibson... joked that like the Space Shuttle, the band "makes lots of noise but no music."
Well, i gotta say I was expecting more "noise" and less "music" from these space travelers.
Do they dabble in more spacey stuff ever I'm wondering? maybe some cool noise electronica?

sea otter, I listened to that YouTube, too, and thoroughly enjoyed it, and then clicked on another MaxQ group -- not the astronaut band -- and took the YouTube detour to the Land of Time I Should Have Spent Doing Something Else. I love a capella singing so wandered around there for a while, and that led to an a capella cover of a Queen song, which led me to listening to Freddy Mercury, which led me to... well, you get the idea.

I think I see cloud formations that ruoghly approximate central america's moutain range. (just a guess)
Re: APOD: Home from Above (2010 Nov 15)
She was born in Arcadia CA. She is looking at CA. USA.
Re: APOD: Home from Above (2010 Nov 15)
The pitcure is great! In the distance, above the Karman line. Is that the space shuttle? Or a big satellite? Or...?
Re: APOD: Home from Above (2010 Nov 15)
The clouds in the main round window look exactly like Mexico, the clouds are exceptionally thick at the spot where Yukatan peninsula would be.
Re: APOD: Home from Above (2010 Nov 15)
I believe that Tracy is looking over the Pacific just before coming up on the coast of California and her home in Arcadia.
