Re: Recent Submissions: 2012 December
Attached is an image of the Europa transit on 3 December, a few hours after opposition. Years ago, a friend claims to have seen a crescent-shaped image of a shadow transit near or at opposition as the moon itself blocked part of the shadow. Not sure if I believed him, I went on a quest late Sunday night to check it out. Blog post is at:

A SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE CELESTIAL PORTRAIT
From New Zealand, the Land of the Long White Cloud, the heavens shine more beautifully than nearly anywhere else on Earth. Here Queenstown's Lake Wakatipu and moonlit snow-capped mountains make a perfect setting to enjoy the night sky on November 20, 2012. Near image-center appear two Southern Hemisphere celestial showpieces--the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, two small satellite galaxies of our own. Near bottom center and along the band of the Milky Way (the Long White Cloud) shines the iconic constellation Crux (Southern Cross) and, to its right, the bright stars Beta and Alpha Centauri (the nearest star system to our own sun). © Dennis Mammana/dennismammana.com

Salton Sea is a pretty strange place. This is shot on the South East corner of the lake with the glow of a power plant behind me illuminating the trees in a single 30sec exposure.

Crescent Moon and planets over the Basilica
http://stefanoderosa.com/
Copyright: Stefano De Rosa Please find above the image I took early yesterday morning (December 11, 2012), showing the lovely conjucntion above the eastern horizon between two naked-eye planets and a bright crescent Moon. Near the left bottom of the frame is Mercury just above the colorful twilight glow while Venus is shining left of the Moon's sunlit crescent.
The scene is completed by the silhouette of the Basilica of Saint John Bosco, located in Castelnuovo Don Bosco, some 20 km from Turin (Italy).
Best regards
Stefano

The Polaris Winter Forest by Radical Retinoscopy, on Flickr
The following star trail photograph was made by using 176 twenty-five second exposures for a total exposure time of about 75 minutes. Each exposure was taken with a Canon t2i and a 17-40L lens at 19 mm. (ISO 400, f/4.0) I planned on making the exposure longer but dew started to form on the lens limiting the exposure to 75 minutes. I really like the way the barren trees appear to arch upward virtually reaching around Polaris.
