Re: Music Thread.
Man, since when did NASA CSA have professional video editors and a film crew in space? Ha! Look at those flares. So pro.

Re: Music Thread.
Chris Hadfield must be the best PR person NASA has had since - I don't know, Carl Sagan? I bet Sagan didn't sing that well, though.
Great video and a wonderful Bowie song.

I think Chris Hadfield is CSA, not NASA. He's a Cannuck.

Starman falls to Earth after five-month space odyssey
ALMATY/CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - The first Canadian astronaut to command the International Space Station landed safely in Kazakhstan with two crewmates on Tuesday, wrapping up a five-month mission aboard the International Space Station.

The real Star Man: David Bowie champions Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield's 'Space Oddity'
Simon Usborne, The Independent, Monday 13 May 2013
<<Commander Hadfield sings in several bands and enlisted his friend, Emm Gryner, to play piano over his vocals. Gryner, a former Bowie band member, then worked with her fellow Canadians, Joe Corcoran, a producer, and filmmaker Andrew Tidby to finish the film. The astronaut, 53, arrived in orbit in late December. The Canadian Space Agency always planned to exploit his charm to create good PR, but did not predict such a hit. Evan, 28, said: “I don’t think an astronaut has had this level of media success since the Moon landings.”>>

Re: Music Thread.
Trying out a new BBCode. Maybe it's more efficient than using Youtube embeds.
Been listening to a lot of James Vincent McMorrow's work lately.
And in the forest I made my home
lay down on hard and ancient stone . . .
If anyone else uses Grooveshark, you can click the song, click "share" and then go to the embed tab. Find the song ID in the embed HTML and put it between tags:

Geeeze, that's more work than just copying the url and pasting it. At least with the copy-paste, you also get a video or picture. And it takes longer to type grooveshark than youtube.

Yeah, more work behind the scenes but I kinda like it. It's all about the results, Beyond.

I love acapella singing, and I think that this is really good. And also informative!AstroCappella.com
We've been commissioned to write songs for several NASA missions. We're proud of our 100% mission-success rate! All band members participate in song-writing activities and the group includes two PhD astrophysicists and a former space weather forecaster. In addition to the strictly AstroCappella songs, we write and perform a variety of songs appropriate for tech-savvy audiences covering topics like the science of love, the addiction of the Internet, and the passage of long and short time-scales.
There's no way of embedding the songs here, but some can be downloaded free as mp3 files. Titles include:
- Hubble Space Telescope Bop
- Swift Song (gamma ray bursts)
- Sun Song

Re: Music Thread.
I updated the Youtube code to be a lot more efficient so the music thread shouldn't feel like you are on an old dial-up connection anymore. Too bad I can't do the same with the vimeo code.

Re: Music Thread.
There's now a different problem. I used to click the title link at the top of each video to go directly to YouTube to view it. I get many more options as to viewing size, linking, etc. that way. But now there is no title link and no option except to view the video here in the thread it was posted in.
But yes, the thread loads faster.

Re: Music Thread.
Clicking the thumbnail loads the video exactly the same way that the forum used to except with an autoplay variable turned on. If you want to view it at YouTube you can click the logo in the lower right corner and it will stop the playback here and resume it where you left off at the YouTube website.

And when you get to youtube, you can click on the right most little rectangle at the bottom right and view on a bigger screen. (IF you didn't know that already)rstevenson wrote:And now I know what that logo is for.

Beyond, I watched the video; my son, also sitting here in the living room with his laptop, said the singer "still sounds like a Smurf." This (amused and) surprised me, so I asked him, "Do you know who this singer is?" "Yes.... Neil Young." "No," said I. "Oh god... you means there's another one who sounds like a Smurf??"
I asked whether the song gave it away... "Rocky Mountain hiiiiiiiiiigh.... Colorado..... " No. He'd never heard it (!!) before. And says he's never heard of John Denver. I asked him how many Bachs he could name. He said, "Two.... J.S. and C.P.E..... I'm assuming P.D.Q. doesn't count." (Made me laugh, that!)
I'll have to spend some of my iTunes bucks on some John Denver. Kid listens to someone growling in Finnish over a drum beat, but doesn't know iconic John Denver tunes; my work in educating him clearly is not done yet!!
I like Colorado; it's been a few decades since I was last there, however.

I got the first Bach. Don't have a clue as to the two others.
Sometime near the end of last century, i taped a wildlife concert that John Denver had done and PBS was showing. I liked most of the songs. He had a few people on stage with him playing instruments and one singing voice. She looked like Gates McFadden that played Dr. Beverly Crusher on S.T.N.G. So PBS should have John Denver's wildlife concert for sale, IF they still have it.
He sounds a lot better with just a little help. Then, he doesn't sound like a smurf
EDIT: youtube has a lot of the wildlife concert songs. Here's the opening one.
