Airplane Astrophotography

Two image composition. Same as my privious upload, I was not able to get good sky while I was in the plane returning home, but the ground was lighted by the moon, blending the image I took from the ground in the airplane with a sky picture I took while back I was able the get a ISS look from the earth.

The Halo

ImageThe Halo by markg, on Flickr

There has been some stunning weather around Wellington, New Zealand recently, and the sky just before sunset last night was incredible. As the sun was setting, a stunning sun halo formed and set the perfect scene for the perfect sunset amongst some spectacular cloud formations.

Sun halos, also known as a 22 degree halo, are formed by sunlight passing through ice crystals in cirrus clouds within the Earth's atmosphere. The crystals bend the direct sunlight projecting it elsewhere in the sky and at a certain angle - which just happens to be 22 degrees. You may also notice the bright areas on the halo on either side of the sun - these are known as a pair of Parhelia (sun dogs) complete with tails, also known as Parhelic Circles.

Japan's Himawari-8 satellite is sending back wonderful images of Earth. Seeing them posted today with all individual bands made available, I decided to play with them, myself.

The two images show Earth in Himawari-8's visible light bands 3 (Red), 2 (Green), and 1 (Blue) and infrared bands 10 (Red), 9 (Green), and 8 (Blue) allowing us to view swirling currents of water vapor in contrast to visible white clouds.

Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.

Following Spaceweather forecasts, and with Twitter contacts keeping each other posted on conditions around the province, we were lucky enough to see the aurora tonight.
Fortunately it was active after sunset, and we had a nice show before clouds rolled in.
Even at 44 degrees south latitude the aurora managed to reach quite high into the sky.
A beautiful display on the first day of winter!
Thats me in the photo,

Also known as IC 1805 The Heart Nebula & IC1848 The Soul Nebula, this is a Hybrid process using both Color (RGB) and Narrowband (H-Alpha, SII and OIII) and a crop of my 4 panel Mosaic of this area. Captured from my backyard observatory in Fremont, Michigan USA, between August and October 2014 using QHY11/TAK E-180 and my earlier data collected in 2012 using QHY9/TMB92SS.
Total Integration time 56.5 Hours

I took many pictures of the full moon to show the libration. While creating the animation I matched the disk sizes (ps: about disk sizes) and rotated each frame so that Tycho appeared at about 6 o'clock.

Comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) on December 21 2014

ImageComet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) on December 21 2014 by Radical Retinoscopy, on Flickr

Comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) has just reached a height of about fifteen degrees above my southern horizon. From my observing site, the southern horizon is my most heavily light polluted area of the sky. I can barely discern a tail at this point; the next few weeks should prove to be interesting! The image was made of a stack of 38 twenty second exposures (Canon T2i, 100 mm f/2 lens @ f/3.2, ISO 800). Tracking was done with an iOptron Sky Tracker with stacking done in Nebulosity.
