The annual meteor shower Perseid had absolute great conditions this year. New Moon occurred just day after the maximum as it was about 6:30 to 9:00 UTC on August 13th, 2015. Last time the „moonless Perseids“ were in 2013 and the next time we will enjoy that in 2018. I took a risk for possible bad weather and chose amazing locality of eastern Slovakia, where can be found the Poloniny Dark Sky Park. The decision showed up to be absolutely great. Even if the dusty and dry weather (with almost all nights without clouds!) highlighted the light pollution of far cities, especially in the Ukraine, the silvery Milky Way was such beautiful at least higher above the horizon. As a member of meteoric expedition for youth at the Kolonica observatory I had great hinterland for capturing as much Perseid meteors as I could. I spent glorious 6 nights under the Poloniny sky and captured this fantastic portrait of the meteor shower. You can count 174 meteors of the Perseids, captured between 8th and 14th August 2015. Watching the skies on the image, I was standing there above the Kolonica Saddle and enjoying the show despite a danger of negligible presence of the wild Brown bears. The brightest fireball in the upper part of the image was about -7 magnitude and followed by colorful meteoric „smoky“ trail (this one fallen on 14th August just a two hours before the daybreak). In the Milky Way there are numerous nebulae as NGC 7000 „The North America“ or NGC 896 „Heart and Soul“. The colors of the meteors are caused by the energy of excitation of the Nitrogen and Oxygen in our atmosphere, which is given to the air by the debris of the comet 109P Swift-Tuttle, with entry speed about 59 km/s. The comet invited the inner Solar System in 1992 and next time return is being more less planned for our children or grandchildren in 2126. But the meteor shower remains us the comet every year… More info: http://www.astronom.cz/horalek/?p=1700

http://www.astronom.cz/horalek/wp-conte ... 1500px.png

An additional note: The colors of meteors are not caused only by excitation of molecules in the air, but mostly by heavier elements contained in the meteoroid during its fall in the atmosphere. More is written for example here: http://leonid.arc.nasa.gov/meteor.html

Copyright: Daniele Malleo I haven't seen this imaged before, but I thought it warranted some exposure time. Some interesting "stuff" going on in the top right quadrant (Perhaps a professional astronomer can comment on it), balancing out the dark nebula running along the left half of the frame.

(much) higher resolution and wider field available on request.

Shaula and Lesath at the Scorpion Tail

At the end of the Scorpion tail you will find a graceful pattern of stars: Shaula and Lesath. If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, Scorpius will be in your southern sky. In the picture Shaula is the star on the left and Lesath at the low right. These two noticeable stars are referred to as the Stinger of Scorpius, and sometimes the Cat’s Eyes. For many observers it is a good reference or starting point to find other objects. These two stars form a straight imaginary line towards Messier 7.

After Antares, Shaula is the second brightest star system in the Scorpius constellation and one of the brightest star of the night sky. Its name comes from the Arabic language meaning "the raised" as it is found in the tail of the scorpion. Is the primary of a multiple star system consisting of two B-type stars and a pre-main sequence star. Lesath from the Arabic was lately understood as the "foggy patch". There are measurements indicating that Lesath is a super-giant with a luminosity of 12.300 times our Sun.

Best to all

Orion Complex - Widefield (Using a DSLR and minimal tracking)

The Orion Molecular Cloud Complex (or, simply, the Orion Complex) is a large group of bright nebulae, dark clouds, and young stars in the Orion constellation. The cloud is between 1 500 and 1 600 light-years away, and hundreds of light-years across. Several parts of the nebula can be observed through binoculars and small telescopes, and some parts (such as the Orion Nebula) are visible to the naked eye.
In the image is:
1) Witch Head Nebula
2) Orion Nebula
3) Running Man Nebula
4) Branard's Loop
5) Horsehead Nebula
6) Flame Nebula
7) M78
and rest are all annotated
Learning PixInsight for the last few days and i am already addicted, been going over old data (which i thought was not good enough) to see what i can do with it and i am constantly amazed at what PI is doing to it.
This is a stack of 28 + 4 = 32 frames, 28 normal, 4 with CLS Filter on. Odd number of images because few shots were for test and had to throw some away because of tracking errors. Only 4 frames with CLS filter because the clouds rolled in soon.
The data was captured earlier this year (23rd Jan) between 9 to 10 pm from warkweorth satellite station and tracked using vixen polarie. (Thanks Jonathan to use the polarie)
Each:
Normal frame: 28 x 60sec, ISO 1600
CLS Frame: 4 x 120sec, ISO 3200 (Longer exposure and ISO as the filter makes the images darker and captures less light)
Total Exposure Time = 2160 sec = 36 min
Exif: as above, Canon 50mm f1.8 (Nifty Fifty) on Canon 6D

8-pane Mosaic (Hubble Palette) of the Gamma Cygni Region

Post by dp297 » Thu Aug 27, 2015 11:12 am

This is an 8-pane mosaic with initial dimensions 10675X7384px.
From the beginning I had multiple problems with the lens due to flexure but fortunately they were solved with the help of a good friend

Star trails and Meteors over the highest village in Asturias, north of Spain
Image
[superhide]
[/superhide]

The other day, after a trek over the Cantabric Mountains of the North of Spain we stopped at La Raya, the highest village in the region.
After moon set I took this star trails image with the village in the foreground and one of the more prominent mountains (which we had climbed few hours before), the Toneo Peak, in the background.
We can also notice two meteors in this picture, perhaps some late perseids!
Great combination, trekking by day and stargazing by night!
