APOD: Apollo 11 Landing Panorama (2019 Jul 20)

Post by APOD Robot » Sat Jul 20, 2019 4:05 am

Image Apollo 11 Landing Panorama

Explanation: Have you seen a panorama from another world lately? Assembled from high-resolution scans of the original film frames, this one sweeps across the magnificent desolation of the Apollo 11 landing site on the Moon's Sea of Tranquility. The images were taken by Neil Armstrong looking out his window of the Eagle Lunar Module fifty years ago, shortly after the July 20, 1969 landing. The frame at the far left (AS11-37-5449) is the first picture taken by a person on another world. Toward the south, thruster nozzles can be seen in the foreground on the left, while at the right, the shadow of the Eagle is visible to the west. For scale, the large, shallow crater on the right has a diameter of about 12 meters. Frames taken from the Lunar Module windows about an hour and a half after landing, before walking on the lunar surface, were intended to initially document the landing site in case an early departure was necessary.

Kinda expected a photo or vid of Armstrong's first footstep on the Moon. Oh well, no shortage of other places to see the most historic footfall in space exploration (so far).

Just as zero is not equal to infinity, everything coming from nothing is illogical.

Come to think of it (the famous "big footprint" photo), where does it come in the sequence of outside photos? I remember a few years ago I came across a list of all the photos in each of the film cartridges used on the Apollo missions, but I can't remember now where that list is.

Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface 6 hours 39 minutes
[after landing] on July 21 at 02:56 UTC; Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later.

All the A-11 moon photos are listed and linked in the First Link, https://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/a11/a11_eva_thumbs.html
They are listed in chronological order.

That's it, thanks. Looks like the footprint was one of Aldrin's first photos after coming down the ladder. So, we have his first footprint on film, but not Armstrong's.

This is APOD. Notice the photo in the top left corner is "the first photo taken by a human on another world." (Previous photos were all taken in orbit, not on the Moon, or Mars, Venus.)

What I consider one of the most significant files I've ever downloaded is a 10-minute sound clip. Gene Kranz on the Flight Director's loop in one ear, and Charlie Duke on the CAPCOM loop in the other. From a few minutes after PDI to just after landing. Gives me chills every time I play it.

A close second are the video clips of each landing from the old Apollo Lunar Surface Journal archive — Apollo 11, Apollo 12, Apollo 14, Apollo 15, Apollo 16, and Apollo 17.

It's fun listening to the differences in how each crew carried out the landing. Apollo 12 in particular, a.k.a. The Pete and Al Show, sounded like a couple of old pilots swapping yarns over a few beers.
