APOD: Curiosity at Teal Ridge (2019 Aug 08)

Post by APOD Robot » Thu Aug 08, 2019 4:06 am

Image Curiosity at Teal Ridge

Explanation: Part of a 360 degree panorama, this view looks out from the Mars rover Curiosity's current location on the Red Planet dubbed Teal Ridge. The mosaicked scene was captured by the rover's Mastcam on Earth calendar date June 18, 2019. That corresponds to Curiosity's sol 2440, or 2,440th martian day on the surface. Since landing seven years ago on August 6, 2012 in Gale Crater, Curiosity has traveled some 21 kilometers (13 miles). On the right, the rover's tracks lead back toward Vera Rubin Ridge with the Gale Crater rim visible in the distance. The robotic rover leaves wheel tracks about 3 meters (10 feet) apart. During its mission, Curiosity has had great successes exploring the history of water in the martian environment. In fact, NASA's Mars 2020 rover is largely based on the Mars Curiosity rover design.

You thought this was Teal Ridge? Nope, it's Endeavour Crater, by NASA/JPL-Caltech/Cornell Univ./Arizona State University.

It is very seldom that a Martian panorama photograph from any of the landers does not look like it could have been taken on Earth.
Mars is indeed our brother planet.

But for a few plants here and there, Mars isn't alien looking at all. Just needs a few cacti and reptiles.

Nice bird Ann. At first I thought male Green-winged Teal, but something looked odd. Ah, no white shoulder feathers on the front of its wing. It's an Eurasian Teal. Not on my life list yet, since I haven't birded outside of N. America yet.

Hi,
It seems, as seen in the picture, the trace of wheel track of the robotic rover, is the clear impression as if stamped in the moistureous / damp sand.
I think there would exist some water in the ground.
Curiosity's photos are curious.
Regards.

The atmospheric pressure is too low to allow for liquid water at the surface.

Is it just me or there are two paralel marks on de upper left side of the image, on the surface of the rock's layers?
It might be possible that they are only marks left by the rover's mechanic arm during a survey before the mosaic picture was taken?
