NGC3201 - Globular Cluster in Vela
http://www.rolfolsenastrophotography.com
Copyright: Rolf Wahl Olsen Link to large image (4.1MB): http://goo.gl/OcpBWU

NGC 3201 is a globular cluster located approximately 16,600 light years away in the southern constellation of Vela. The cluster appears as a fluffy ball of stars with a rather loosely concentrated core, unlike some other globulars with very dense cores such as 47 Tucanae and Messier 80.
The diameter of the cluster is around 40 light years and it contains the mass of an estimated 254,000 Suns.
The cluster orbits our galaxy with an unusually high velocity of 490 km/s.
Interestingly the cluster has an inhomogeneous star population, with hotter bluer stars located further out from the core. this is visible in the image where many blue stars can be seen in the outskirts of the cluster, while the core with the predominantly older stars appears more reddish.

This is a shot of my friends house in Gualala Ca. The house is right on the ocean and we were lucky to have no fog day or night for 5 days.
Setup: 17mm, F2.8, 30 second exposure @ ISO 3200
Lighting was from house lights and campfire
Equipment: Canon 1Dm3, 16-35mm F2.8L USM, remote shutter

I was fortunate to be vacationing with my family in Fenwick Island, DE when I learned of the upcoming launch of the LADEE spacecraft on a Minotaur 5 rocket. The launch was from the NASA Wallops Island Flight Center about 50-60 miles south of my location. I was amazed by how bright and vividly the launch illuminated the southwestern sky at my viewing point. I expected the rocket to appear like a satellite; I was completely floored to see how bright and dramatic the launch was from 50 miles away!

Nova Delphini 2013, Animation

Post by Efrain Morales » Sat Sep 07, 2013 2:27 pm

Nova Delphini 2013 on August 23rd, 01:01ut. Four images taken from the 16th, 18th, 23rd and Sept. 2nd, See Animation At:( http://www.jaicoa-observatory.com/SNDel ... im-EMr.gif ) Showing the Nova brightness differentials through this period (decreasing) and more on the red (Ha). A nova (plural novae or novas) is a cataclysmic nuclear explosion in a white dwarf star. It is caused by the accretion of hydrogen on to the surface of the star, which ignites and starts nuclear fusion in a runaway manner. (Equipment info on image)
