Conjunction of Venus and the Moon above Budapest with some NLC
Copyright: György Soponyai
Today early dawn I planned to capture the conjunction with the Hungarian Parliament in the foreground when an unexpected companion joined to the Lunar-Venusian duet on the Northwestern sky: the most wonderful Noctilucent cloud I've ever seen.

Noctilucent clouds under Cassiopea
Credits: Adrien Mauduit
Explamnation: As the night draws to an end for me and after staying up all night to get pictures, film, time-lapse and participate in one of Project Possum's airborne mission webinars, I was able to capture the season's first bright display of noctilucent clouds over Over strand Denmark. At around 1:30, they shone bright right under the constellation Cassiopea, visible on the picture, along with Capella and Mirphak. They went on for about two hours and half, and a lot of types were visible: I, II, III, IV and V, S.
Some low tropospheric clouds came to play, and remind us that NLC's are the highest ones (83km vs 1km!)

I find those unbelievably delicate noctilucent clouds wonderfully lovely, too.

Here is a revamped image from SSRO, Steve Mazlin and I combined our individual images and came up with this.
"In the Shadow of the Horsehead no more"
NGC 2023 is an emmission and reflection nebula located in the constellation of Orion, most times seen in images of the Horsehead nebula. We took direct aim at this nebula to try to bring out all of its wonderful detail.
It is 4 light years in diameter making it one of the largest reflection nebulae ever discovered.

Wow, that's a superb image! It's the first time I've seen emission nebulosity in NGC 2023, but since its central star is spectral class B1.5V, it is hot enough to do some ionizing on its own.
Fantastic, candy-color image! (And that is meant as high praise!)

NGC 3191 and the supernova SN 2017egm
Copyright: Velimir Popov, Emil Ivanov @
Irida Observatory
On May 23th 2017, the Gaia Photometric Science Alerts program reported the discovery of an apparent supernova in the galaxy NGC 3191. Later it was designed as SN 2017egm. It turned out to be the closest hydrogen-poor superluminous supernova (SLSN-I) ever found. On June 23th we managed to capture an image of this rare cosmic explosion. Below can be seen a highly magnified crop:

Zodiacal light from Wilcherry homestead ruins, northern Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The image shows the Milky Way and Canopus to the left of the ruins, and to the right, the cone shaped zodiacal light during the last stages of astronomical twilight on 20 June 2017. The homestead operated from the early 1900's to the mid 1950's and is a seldom photographed dark sky site.
