Since this is an owl thread... i present the case of The Hidden Hooter.
IF you can't find the second owl in the picture on the left... then just look at the picture on the right.

Re: owlice - do you know about blackbirds??

This is NOT about owls - tho I have spent an enjoyable few minutes watching the video that Geckzilla posted.

Midday today, a blackbird came onto our terrace and sat on the back of a garden chair and began to shout his/her head off. It stayed for at least half an hour and at first I thought that it was a parent bird with a youngster in distress. But, no baby birds were visible, and our cats were not around. (It is early for baby birds, but not impossible here).

I think it was a female, as it was not a coal black, which Male Canarian blackbirds are (they are a sub-species).
Does anyone know if female blackbirds claim territory? Because that is what it looked like - even doing that tail-up, wings slightly flattened posture whilst making this harsh chip-chip-chip call. She/he allowed me within about three feet, yelling at me all the time.

Any thoughts?
Margarita

PS. We now know that it is an adolescent - because our cat has just brought it in...
It is in shock, and we've put it into a darkened cat box with water.

I hope your bird survives. I witnessed a little Goldfinch crash into our living room window at lunch today. I ran out to the porch and one of our cats was already hovering over what appeared to be lifeless body. I picked it up and held it in my hand rubbing its little head. It slowly began to stir and finally flew off like a shot when it regained its senses. Poor kitty will have to eat something else.

A happy story involving a pair of barn owls... one of my gaming friends heard a bunch of noise in her chimney. For a few days, her parents told her they were probably smaller birds and to leave the damper closed so they wouldn't get in the house. But she knew better when she heard the talons and wing beats. She got brave and took a look... not just one but two big beautiful beauties! Luckily she has a big wildlife center right in her town so she called them. They have a whole web page just for them and looks like they are going to be set free soon!

Owlice knows this already - but we also had success with our adolescent blackbird! After a quiet night he/she was fine, flew offa little unsteadily, but was met by a parent and led away. The parent bird wasn't nearby the evening before, so - as we had had quite are strong winds - I suspect that our little guy had been blown away from his nesting area when he was testing his wings.

I found this by chance on Facebook whilst looking for the creator of an image of lightening that is in the Found Images April thread. The photographer of both appears to be a Glen Nofsinger.

Saw-Whet Owl
This came up on a YouTube suggestion list just now whilst I was viewing a talk by Michio Kaku... Not immediately obvious how it was related to theoretical physics but gratefully received nevertheless.

Is it the same species as the photo I posted above? :owl:

Here ya go, Margarita. You can do some owl sleuthing in your spare(??) time. Scrolling down to page 32 will bring up a size comparison chart, that has the saw-whet owl in it.

ZeFrank does a whole bunch of witty and silly videos just like that. It's amazing how far you can get with a voice so similar to Morgan Freeman's.

When his post count reaches the same number as the current year then he'll only post once per year to keep the numbers synchronized.
