Great image of starburst galaxy NGC 6946. This galaxy is a true supernova factory. It is surprisingly non-blue in color despite all the massive stars it contains, but that is because it is so dusty. NGC 6946 is two magnitudes brighter in the far infrared, a signature of dust, than it is in blue light, even though we see it face on. That's a lot.

This picture is a bit blue in color balance. But it brings out the intense yellow parts of the galaxy as well as the blue ones. And to the credit of Michael Joner, David Laney and Robert Gendler, their image makes the galaxy look blue mostly in the rarely seen, faint outer arms. The inner arms, while blue in places, are dominated by pink nebulae and dust reddening.

I love Iván Éder's image of the MiIlky Way, too. The colors are beautiful and subtle.

Wow! If I like an astrophoto in the Hubble palette, it must be processed by Robert Gendler. And it is, too! And look at the stars. They are not the Hubble palette, which would have given them a sickly pinkish hue, but instead they are natural color!
