APOD Nov 19

Post by Perry W. Rogers » Fri Nov 19, 2004 3:33 pm

Good Morning,

My fourth graders always like to see the APOD. Today's picture sparked an interesting question. Why does the new picture of Phobos appear to show layers much like those seen in an eroded rock wall?

Thanks for your time,

Been a long time since I was in 4th grade. However I had the same question and emailed it to Dr. Nimiroff. That is how I was directed to this forum, and hope some one does have an explanation.

Jerry Bonnell wrote that APOD. He has posted a similar (but 3D!) image today and today's explanation does address the layers question. See: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap041120.html
