Re: Recent Submissions: 2012 October
Yesterday it rained ... and this afternoon, in full photoshoot has come a flock of flying ants on the ground to fertilize ... one has fun with the lens mounted on a tripod.

Through Zodiacal Light

Venus and Zodiacal light can be seen just before dawn from a rural Connecticut sky! I was out trying to capture the Zodiacal Light and some possible Orionid meteors on the morning of 10/21/12. Here under slightly dark rural skies, Zodiacal Light can still be seen in some spots and glows just as bright as the faint light pollution on the horizon. When I was reviewing my photos I noticed that this frame might have a big meteor in it! On closer examination I found this was no meteor but it was a satellite. From what it looks like it seems I had caught a satellite passing through the Zodiacal Light. Not knowing, I took the shot just as it was being lit by and exiting the zodiacal light. A pleasant surprise to make up for no meteors in the shot! (according to heavens above this is rocket body - Cosmos 1943 Rocket and was at the end of its visible pass)
Photographed at 5:34 am EDT / 9:34 am UTC
located at Mudge pond in Sharon, CT. USA

A small field in NGC 1763

This was the winning image in the 2012 Hubble's Hidden Treasures contest. It is processed from data freely available in the Hubble Legacy Archive. It is an image of a small portion of the N11 star-forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. A representative color combination from the hydrogen and nitrogen data reveals a dark, dusty filament on a backdrop of glowing gas.

"Orion The Hunted"
The Orionid Meteor Shower just passed this last weekend. Here is a photo showing a meteor going right above Orion's belt and into his stomach (theoretically). I got extremely lucky with this shot since it was only a 4 second exposure with the canon 50mm F/1.4 lens.
Sharing is appreciated!
Camera Details:
Canon T3i
Canon 50MM F/1.4
ISO 1600 for 4 Seconds.
Added diffraction spikes to show constellation
"Orionids"
The Orionid meteor shower rained bits of the famed Halley's Comet in Tucson, Arizona last night and what a sight it was. A couple friends and I laid out some blankets and enjoyed the show out at Gates Pass.
Sharing is appreciated!
Photo Details:
Composite image of 5 images from a time-lapse
Canon 5DMKII 16MM F/2.8
ISO 2500 for 21 Seconds

The Orion and other winter constellations with faint airglow from La Silla, Chile before daybreak on 15th October 2012. Image bit saturated to yellow/green because of the airglow.
