APOD: Meteor and Moonbow over Wallaman Falls (2012 Nov 12)

Post by APOD Robot » Mon Nov 12, 2012 5:14 am

Image Meteor and Moonbow over Wallaman Falls

Explanation: Which feature takes your breath away first in this encompassing panorama of land and sky? The competition is strong with a waterfall, meteor, starfield, and even a moonbow all vying for attention. It is interesting to first note, though, what can't be seen -- a rising moon on the other side of the camera. The bright moon not only illuminated this beautiful landscape in Queensland, Australia last June, but also created the beautiful moonbow seen in front of Wallaman Falls. Just above the ridge in the above image is the horizontal streak of an airplane. Toward the top of the frame is the downward streak of a bright meteor, a small pebble from across our Solar System that lit up as it entered the Earth's atmosphere. Well behind the meteor are numerous bright stars and nebula seen toward the center of our Galaxy. Finally, far in the background, is the band of our Milky Way Galaxy, running diagonally from the lower left to the upper right in the image but also circling the entire sky.

Has a dagger pierced the heart of the great Scorpion? It looks like the meteor passed right in front of Antares..

Right now, 10:55 edt, i can't get anything. My windows diagnostics says nasa's gateway is closed. Oh, well.

Also, how come the w's are faded after they're posted? I noticed this a couple of days ago. Something wrong with the computer?

Edit--It's now high noon and It's back!

Aw, heck :!: I go back and the nasa gateway is closed again :!:
Well, at least i got to see the picture.
Maybe nasa will get it fixed soon.
Now... if they could only do something about these faded-->wwww. Doesn't seem to be so bad with the caps. WWWW

Wonderful photo. Had a little trouble accessing the site for about an hour this morning, but with patience we were rewarded with this exciting photo. Thank you.

Is a link to a listing of mirror APOD sites that may be working if there's a problem at NASA.

And below is a link to a recent Owlice post I discovered that also lists mirror sites...

Doesn't it make you feel as if your feet are in the ceiling and your head is hanging down, the way I pictured people "down under" when I was a kid?

It looks just like this from the northern hemisphere, just at a different time. The Milky Way "flips" which side appears to be the top and which appears to be the bottom between its rise and set... in either hemisphere.

I would be grateful if someone could please clarify something for me. In the explanation to this APOD it states "...the band of our Milky Way Galaxy, running diagonally from the lower left to the upper right in the image but also circling the entire sky" (my use of the bold and underlined text for emphasis). Am I right therefore in assuming that if it could somehow be actually seen then the Milky Way could appear as a circle :?:. That would be spectacular if it is possible.

If your latitude is equal to 90° minus the inclination of the Milky Way, you'll see the Milky Way form a band all the way around the horizon once each day. In other words, you'll see this if you have very dark skies and are located at about 30° latitude (north or south).

It's not likely to be very impressive, however, given that sections of the Milky Way aren't very bright, and there will be a good deal of attenuation through the long atmospheric path.
