logical system for low resolution version of the pictures

Post by DeerDance » Tue Feb 05, 2013 7:17 pm

Hi,
usually sites that host pictures offer some logical way how to change original size picture to various sizes.

examples:

imgur:

add small "L" at the end

minus:

change i at the start to j

photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov

change /jpeg/ or anything there to /jpegMod/ and add _modest behind the filename

But APOD seems to have no logical, sure way to do this, checking 'thumbs' on the main page only shows sporadic usage of suffixes like _960 or 900x, or not suffixes but replacement of the part of the name.
And so even when the picture is shown in a small size frame, its downloaded in the full size and scaled down.

Is there some way to do this? Usage I need this for is when users post a link to image, so no real other info only link that a user posts.

The sites you've listed all create the various sizes through automated means. All of APOD's images are manually edited and added so there isn't much consistent about it. The only thing I know to use is the calendar icons which are automatically generated sometime after the APOD is published for the day but only if the image is something it can handle and not a video or some other interactive media. The generic Pluto image is used if it can't generate something.

Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.
