APOD: Moon or Frying Pan (2013 Apr 01)

Image Moon or Frying Pan

Explanation: Which is which? Of the two images shown above, one is a moon in our Solar System, while the other is the bottom of frying pan. We are not making this up -- can you tell a pan from a planetoid? Think you got it? To find the answer click here. OK, but there are more! That's right: you, your family, friends, neighbors, and local elected officials can all play "Moon or Frying Pan" with these other image pairs, too. As everyone knows, the fundamental underlying reason why moons and frying pans appear similar is -- OK, we at APOD aren't sure either. And if you've been fooled, don't fret -- just remember that it's OK because today is April Fool's Day.

If this becomes a tradition, I'm glad we will only get 'mooned', once a year. :yes: I got 'fooled' on #5, but on #7 i recognized the orange and picked the alternative answer, which of course, is wrong also. :lol2:

Moons and frying pans are similar in appearance, because they both have a CRUST...This fry pan had a really baked-on one it appears.

The Everyday Solar System Challenge

Simon Wright is a graphic designer in Australia*. He decided he needed to challenge himself to give his brain a workout, so he created what he calls his “Solar System Challenge”: without using Photoshop or any additional after-effects (with the exception of Instagram), create a set of pictures of everyday objects that look like the planets in the solar system.

The results are pretty cool:

If you go to his Facebook page where he has those shots, you can see them in more detail. Click on each one to get an explanation of what it is and which planet it is. I tried to guess how he did each one before reading the description; the closest I came was for Earth, but even then I was way off. ...

Which of these pictures is Saturn's icy moon Iapetus and which is a frying pan?
They're pictures of opposite sides of Iapetus! And here on Earth it's Spring only in the Northern Hemisphere, so playing April Fool's jokes is a politically incorrect act of hemispheric hegemony!

I like today's APOD. It's been a lot of fun to look at all the pictures and links! :D

I particularly liked Simon Wright's Solar System challenge. But I thought that...
The Sun is obvious. The Earth is easy. The Moon is brilliant. Mars is obvious. Jupiter is brilliant. Saturn is obvious. Pluto is perfect. But I had trouble with Mercury, Venus, Uranus and Neptune. It took me a little while to understand that all the planets come "in the right order", so to speak.

wasn't that long ago someone posted a fake Betelgeuse star exploding. That one quickly disappeared
