Aurora over Otertind

The best time for Aurora Borealis is in autumn and spring when the earth axis is more directional toward the solar wind. So there was I higher chance for northern lights on my trip through the Signaldalen Valley in Norway in autumn 2010. We almost experienced aurora every second night, but in this case it was more beautiful than usual as a very colorful display with beamers appears in front of the impressive mountain peak of Otertind.

Illuminated Twilight Shelf Cloud

A shelf cloud is a laminar gust front of a thunderstorm. The gust front occurs when downward winds hit the ground and cold pool is sidelining into the moist, still warmer air mass in front of the storm pushing a new updraft. Horizontal flow pattern and drier air in higher levels (elevated mixed layer) in the storm environment create this typical layered look. The storm produced plastic, illuminating lightning that makes structures even more visible at late night hours while early dawn adds little more color to the whole photogenic atmosphere.

Winter Dawn

When shadow of Earth flee on the opposite side of sunrise, the Belt of Venus sometime creates a dramatic color gradient and light over the landscape, especially in clean air masses. I almost waited for the day's first light rays but this moment short before still impressed me more than the sunrise itself as it is rarely so intensive. So sometimes you should change the view at dusk and dawn time ;-)

This is probably my last Rho Ophiuchi region for this year.
It has been captured yesterday, 100km outside Belo Horizonte in the Serra do Cipó area. It is a composition of 20 frames of 300s each with a 200mm F2.8 lens.
