Post by Kapkowski » Mon Feb 16, 2015 9:43 am

Colourful and rich area between North Orion and Monoceros. Among huge amount of well -know objects there is an open cluster Trumpler 5 - a group of gold stars ( they are old stars :) ) just below ethe centre of the picture.

--- The small chapel under the starry arch ---
"Mont Saint of Michel Braspart" at the top of the Mountains Arre (Brittany, France). A fascinating place, all seasons, at day and night . And there I really felt privileged, Alone there, with a slight hiss of wind, the fog on the horizon and over Lake of Brennilis, and the ark of the Milky Way in front of me.
Some descriptions: the small cluster of stars down the road, is called the Pleiades cluster, and scientifically M45. On the center-left, note the presence of the constellation Orion. The big bright spot (deformed, due to the panorama of more than 180 degrees) on the top left, is not a star, but the planet Jupiter which stands supreme in the winter sky. See also the presence of fog on the right.

A picture I wanted to do for long time :)

Mercury meets Moon near dawn

Planetary summit of our Moon and the small planet Mercury over the old town of Corfu, a Unesco world.
A wonderful planetary sunrise in the sweet colors of dawn.

With the moon even if its a little smaller than Mercury dominates the sky because of it closer distance, about 360,000 km, while the Mercura was about 0.84AU or about 125.7 million km away. The angular separation in the sky of Corfu was about 2.20 °.

Two gods in love, Venus and Mars - 2.35 °

Mars the god of war meets Venus, the goddess of love where the intercourse with whom allegedly acquired Erotas, Deimos and Phobos.

Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It is the brightest object in the night sky after the Sun and the Moon and has a mass of ~ 89% of the Earth. The distance from us was about 1.44AU or otherwise 215.5 million km.

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, and the second closest to the Earth, its mass is equal to 1/10 of the earth. it has two satellites, Phobos and Deimos.
The distance from us was about 2.18AU or ~ 32.6000.000 km.

The distance between Mars-Venus was about 0,74AU but if someone was on Mars would see Venus less brighten than from here, while Mars while be slightly brighter from Venus than from here.
The angular distance was 2,35 ° while on Saturday will be 0.5 ° !!!

Clear skies!

Dreaming of Aurora
http://www.astrofotografen.se
Copyright: Göran Strand Last night, shortly after midnight, I was just about to go to bed. My plan was to get up early to take photos of the thin crescent moon that was coming up over Östersund in the early hours. While brushing my teeth I looked out the window toward north and could see a large but faint auroral oval. I quickly finished brushing my teeth and went out and took a picture to better see how active aurora looked. 5 minutes later I was sitting in the car on the way out in the wilderness with winds of 15 m/s and -5 degrees Celsius. When I stepped out of the car into the darkness, I felt the cold hard winds and I had a hard time not to think of that warm bed and a good night's sleep I just traded away for this. More than 4 hours later and cold to the bone I could finally crawl down in that warm bed. But what a night it had been, totally worth it. With several hours of intense aurora experience on my mind I fell asleep dreaming of aurora.

And what about that early crescent moon you wounder? Zzzzz...
