Hi everyone,

Here is my contribution to the submissions for February 2015. This picture shows the International Space Station (ISS) moving right in front of the Moon. You can also see Venus and Mars behind the tree, left of the house.
What you can't see in this picture is the disappointment of the astronomer (me) missing the shoot through the telescope... While I had the telescope pointed at the Moon and the camera ready to burst a series of fast pictures at the time the ISS was flying in front of the Moon, I did not do a good job at keeping track of time and the ISS flew in front of the Moon while I did not have the remote control in my hands. The transit is so fast (0.6 seconds) that there is no time to grab the remote and shoot. Lesson learned...

Picture taken on February 23rd from Bloomington, IN. Canon Rebel XT (350d) + Fish eye Tamron 8mm. 84 seconds exposure time @100 ISO.

ImageMilky Way over Palouse Falls by jon.webb1, on Flickr

Between 15,000 and 20,000 years ago a collosal lake, called Lake Missoula, was created behind an ice dam in southwestern Montana. As the ice age slowly began to fade into history the ice dam failed and released the largest known flood ever onto the landscape of present day southwestern Montana, eastern Oregon and eastern Washington, creating features we know of as the scablands. The raging torrent of current scoured out canyons and unique features. One of those features is Palouse Falls, shown here, which plunges 198 feet into the bottom of the canyon below. In this photo the falls which are a remnant of multiple ancient floods is seen in the foreground with the Milky Way rising in the background. A moon bow can also be seen in the falls mist to the left of Palouse Falls
