Moon-Venus-Mars Skyline
Explanation: Taken on February 20, five different exposures made in rapid succession were used to created this tantalizing telephoto image. In combination, they reveal a wide
range of brightness visible to the eye on that frigid evening, from the urban glow of the Quebec City skyline to the
triple conjunction of Moon, Venus and Mars. Shortly after sunset the young Moon shows off its bright crescent next to brilliant Venus. Fainter Mars is near the top of the frame. Though details in the Moon's sunlit crescent are washed out, features on the dark, shadowed part of the lunar disk are remarkably clear.
Still lacking city lights the lunar night is illuminated solely
by earthshine, light reflected from the sunlit side of planet Earth.

This view of Quebec city faces southeast does it not? The moon could never be in this position..

Looks more like west or southwest to me.

Using Google maps, I found a spot on the southeastern shore of the St. Lawrence River that shows the buildings in much the same alignment as today's APOD. The viewing direction is just a bit south of west
as shown here. Correspondingly, the Venus-Mars-Moon grouping was also a bit south of west that evening.
I'm somewhat surprised that the text mentions "the wide range of brightness" in this HDR (high dynamic range) image, "though details in the Moon's sunlit crescent are washed out." The sunlit crescent in my own
single-frame, non-HDR image of this grouping is similarly washed out. My picture was taken (in New Jersey) at 6:25 pm EST, and since the moon in the APOD is a slightly higher with respect to Venus and Mars (a little more eastward), it must have been taken a short while later.

In my area, on Feb 21, at 18:30 local time,
I saw the conjunction of Moon and Venus.
I did not see Mars, because the Moon
it was practically to eclipse to Mars.
Between the Moon and Venus had
an iridiscent cloud.
