Carnival of Fireflies
Copyright: Yu Jun & http://NightChina.net/

The Night of Lake Natron belongs to the stars. Without any artificial light disturbing the pure sky, one can easily see the Southern Milky Way, as well as sparkling starlights scattered in it, such as the most distinctive constellation Southern Cross and our nearest stellar neighbours Alpha Centauri. The Night of Lake Natron belongs to the firefly too. These glowing elves were flying up and down among the lush grass on both sides of a ravine stream, like a flowing "Firefly Way", as if to contest with the Milky Way. On the quiet starry night, the fireflies held a grand carnival.

M82, HST data, Ha enhanced

Hi,

This is data from the wonderful HST Legacy Archive of M82 (link) so I hope it's OK to submit my interpretation:

  • M82 - HST data
A 1600x1600 pixel version can be found here.

I particularly wanted to highlight the amazing structure in the Ha emission so I used a portion of the green signal as a continuum to subtract from the Ha. Of course subtracting in this way can lead to noise issues and care has to be taken to avoid negative values but I hope the result above justifies the procedure.

Bob.

Data for this image was taken with two 1m telescopes (1m-04 and 1m-05) at CTIO (Cerro Tololo, Chile) operated by the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope (LCOGT) Network. This is a broadband image using R, V and B filter data for RGB along with some W band data in the luminance.

The Keyhole, The Homunculus, the Fickle Finger and the Mystic Mountain.

It's been a long time goal to capture all these features in the one image. The high dynamic range of the Homunculus and the rest of the field means short sub exposures have to be captured and combined with long sub exposures to show the completed image.

Yesterday we had excellent halo conditions here over Östersund, Sweden. During the day I took a photo of the 22° solar halo. And later that night, 10 hours later, when the Moon was in the same position in the sky, I took another shot from the same location, showing a 22° Moon halo. Here are the two images merged together and I also included the two separate shots. The sun halo was shot on April 1st at 10:21 (UTC standard time) and the Moon halo 10 hours later at 20:30 (UTC standard time).

Beyond The Clouds by The Art of Night, on Flickr

17 March 2015 - Intense aurora activity in the southern hemisphere put on an amazing display tonight, and this was seen in many places where the aurora isn't usually visible. I raced out to the south coast of Wellington, New Zealand to attempt to capture some of the action. There was a strong cold southerly wind blowing, and the aurora and night sky were often covered by clouds. But eventually, there was a break in the weather, and I was able to capture this image of the Aurora Australis beyond the clouds.

Tekapo Dreaming by The Art of Night, on Flickr

Lake Tekapo is located on the South Island of New Zealand, and is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve. Thousands of tourists visit this area every year, and one of the big attractions is The Church of the Good Shepard. This stone built church is located right of the foreshore of Lake Tekapo, and is a photographers dream with stunning views of the mountains to the north, and an amazing location to photograph the Milky Way rising over the church at night. It is the most photographed building in New Zealand, and even at 2am in the morning, there can be dozens of photographers around the church jostling for positions attempting to get that postcard perfect shot. You can see a short time-lapse for this location here: http://vimeo.com/122880577

Fly Me to the Moon by The Art of Night, on Flickr

Here’s a bit of a novelty shot of a Air New Zealand plane - flight NZ0478, departing Wellington bound for Auckland in New Zealand crossing the crescent moon the other night. I was hoping to snare the shot earlier in the night when the light was better, but this was the only opportunity I got - I’m certainly happy I had a chance of the shot at least…

Wanui Nights by The Art of Night, on Flickr

The Wainuamata coast near Wellington, New Zealand is rugged and exposed, but also very picturesque, and a location I've been wanting to photograph at night for a while now. I finally got the perfect night to do so, and hiked the 3.5km with my camera gear out to Baring Head, where I set up overlooking the beach and the Wainuiomata River. The Milky Way was stunning this night as it rose towards the east, and the sky was tinted green with air glow as the distant galaxies of the Malleganic Clouds hovered above. This image is a panorama made up of 24 images stitched together, and was shot on a Epic Gigapan Pro panoramic head. Each image had an exposure time of 25 seconds at f/2.8 ISO 6400, and was shot on a Canon 6d with a 24mm focal length.

Arc Of Light

Arc Of Light by The Art of Night, on Flickr

Looks like the night sky has a grumpy face with the Magellanic Clouds as the eyes and the Aurora as the mouth!

We had just finished a workshop at Lake Tekapo, New Zealand recently, when all of the sudden this stunning arc of light formed low to the horizon to the south. It was the Aurora Australis making an appearance, but somewhat unique, as the arc formation wasn't really seen that much in the southern hemisphere. I knew I had to get a photo of it, so jumped in my car to head to a location near Lake Alexandrina where we had been shooting earlier in the night. The location was perfect for the photo I had in mind. The Aurora was arcing behind the big old tree there, and the Magellanic Clouds were also stunning in the night sky. I composed the scene in front of me, and took the shot - this was certainly one night of astrophotography to remember...
