Copyright: Marc Toso Fortunate photograph of the Big Dipper constellation over the Grand Teton. The night was slightly hazy with clouds streaming by all evening. However, I think all of the moisture in the air had the nice effect on the stars, hence the fantastic brightness of the Big Dipper over the Grand Teton.

These affects can be achieved using various fog filters but I was lucky enough to have nature cooperate with me and provide a filter in the form of water vapor.
This is a single exposure taken on a moonless night using the fantastic Rokinon 35mm f/1.4. With the aperture wide open it sucks in tons of light!
That's a wonderful, almost magical image, Marc!

And it confirms my impression that the three end stars of the handle are those that really stand out in the Big Dipper.

Over the top of a 180 meters cliff, on the westernmost coast of Galician country there stands a XVIII century sentry box built for military purposes, to watch the entry of two estuaries, Vigo and Pontevedra, as well as the Cies islands (see at righthand-side of the sentry box, where a lighthouse reveals its position). But this place has been inhabited since Xth BC century. Nowadays, archeology studies are being carried out and they have already found a dozen of pre-roman buildings.
Now, the legend tells that from these cliffs, souls of the dead (ánimas en Santa Compaña) throw themselves into the ocean as part of their journey to the holy lands.
In any case, despite the light pollution of metropolitan areas nearby, I was delighted to verify that we can still watch the Milky Way from this place, and I can only dream how beautiful the sight had to be in ancient times.

Milky Way at Punta Nariga vs New Technology

Punta Nariga.jpg
Sometimes we are obsessed with the technology, absorbed in this digital world, hurried inside rhythm of this society, that even if we are illuminated by millions of stars we forgot to raise head and look at the sky to see our oldest legacy.

This is the result of paste 8 vertical shots taken at 22mm. Expo: 15", ISO6400, f/2.8.

At Punta Nariga, one of the most beautiful lighthouses at the “Costa da Morte” (Death Coast), Galicia, Spain.

As for observation, to the right we see a very bright star Arcturus it is. Over light pollution, if we do a little zoom, we find Saturn and the constellation Scorpio, with Antares glowing. Another bright star is Altair can see under the arch of the Milky Way at right of lighthouse. If you look at the statue of the lighthouse, on the right of your feet we find Andromeda.

I belong to a group of 3 night photographers called “Enfoque Nocturno” (Night Focus), if you want to see more of our work you can find at http://www.enfoquenocturno.es

Sorry for my poor English

Giraffes By Starlight

ImageGiraffes by Starlight by Mark Gee, on Flickr

Being an astrophotographer in Africa, I had a certain goal in mind, and that was to capture the wildlife under the night sky. It certainly isn’t the easiest thing to do, as you need an animal that is big enough to show up in frame, and they need to be standing still for at least part of the exposure time.

I decided giraffe would be the be subject for this photo, so we went out on to find some willing participants. As I found out finding giraffe isn’t the easiest thing to find at night, but after driving for around 30 minutes, we finally came across a herd. But this herd was a little reluctant to stand still, and every time I’d put my camera over the side of the truck to get a shot, the giraffes moved on. Finally about another 30 minutes later, we came across another herd that were out in a grassy plain. These giraffes were a lot happier to stay still and one was even sitting down in the grass. Ever so carefully trying not to disturb the giraffes, I lowered my camera and tripod over the side of the truck to get a shot. They seemed curious to what we were doing, and to my amazement, the giraffes stayed relatively still for the entire exposure of the shot. I managed to get 5 shots, and this one was the best of the bunch with all giraffes, except for the one on the left, staying perfectly still for the entire exposure.

For the tech specs - this image is a single exposure: Canon 6d with a Zeiss 15mm lens - 30 second shutter @ f/4.0 ISO 6400

This is a 4 panel mosaic image of the Veil supernova remnant, totalling 56 hours of total exposure time. The best part, aside from the image itself, is that the RGB data was captured during the Perseid meteor shower last August, during which I counted over 30 meteors in 90 minutes.
