Amazing corona from today's solar eclipse! From Tidore Indonesia we had 3 minutes of a magnificent totality! I can't stop looking the large prominense right next to the Baileys Beads!

It seemed as if the prominence was competing the Baileys Beads for which it will be more spectacular!
Beautiful Corona structures during totality
A truly spectacular solar eclipse that many people had fun with. I was based in Tidore Indonesia and shared my experience with more than 100 locals that had no idea how to observe it so I had to explain by using body language!

By the way, it looks like the sun is still very active by the first results of spectra taken during the totality.

There is an incredible photo of the eclipse on today's Optics Picture of the Day http://www.atoptics.co.uk/fza92.htm. If it's available for APOD and it isn't already in the APOD queue, it should be.
Eclipse Shadow bands on Cloud ~ The web is full of images of the March 9, 2016 total solar eclipse over Indonesia. But here, Muhammad Rayhan of the Jakarta Planetarium & Observatory has captured something rare. Look below the black sun. The cloud is covered with parallel diagonal bands. These are the fabled 'shadow bands' sometimes seen flickering over the ground at the beginning and end of totality. Here the bands are projected not on the ground but on a translucent layer of intervening cloud. To complete the scene, the pinpoint light of the sun shining along lunar valleys has produced some iridescence and even a fragmentary corona in the cloud droplets. Image ©Muhammad Rayhan

That picture looks strangely fake. Note that I'm not saying that it is; my brain just can't seem to accept those bands as shadows.
Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.

Earthshine and solar corona during maximum eclipse

Post by conemmil » Mon Mar 14, 2016 4:57 am

Sky conditions were excellent during the totality from Tidore Indonesia and some clouds right in the corner didn't stop the corona from being magnificent and well captured. Even the earthshine is very prominent in a single frame image.
I've also reworked the big prominence image to show the actual detail captured by the imaging system.

This version was processed more aggressively to bring out more details in the corona.

I love that image, Constantine! The bluish color of the Earthshine is fantastic, the lunar markings are superb, the pink Ha edge encircling the Moon almost seems to pulsate, and the brilliantly white corona is like a silver setting of a particularly precious stone.

I guess I waxed just a little bit too poetic here, but I simply love your image!
