Starship Asterisk*

The evening highlight of six days back country skiing in NSW was the planetary alignment of Venus, Mercury and Jupiter in the evening sky. I had only a compact Canon Powershot G1X Mark II with me and it took a few nights to get the weather and scenery to cooperate but after an hour of trapsing around and lying down in the snow and wind I managed to capture this shot on our last night out. A beautiful view from winter in the Australian high country.

This is the result of the mosaic of many moon images (232 shots) that were obtained
during a whole year (2013-2014).
Images was taken in different moon phases, then merged with Photoshop.
Colors on the Moon are dominantly controlled by variations in iron (red) and titanium (blue) content.
With multiple saturation boost operations we can see this colors.
colors that are imperceptible to the naked eye. To create the image I used three different digital SLRs, and a monochrome camera on a Newton 200mm aperture and 1000mm focal length, and a Maksutov Cassegrain 90mm aperture and 1250mm focal length.

The Cygnus's Wall -- North America Nebula

The North America Nebula (NGC 7000 or Caldwell 20) is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, close to Deneb.

Cygnus's Wall is a term for the "Mexico and Central America part" of the North America Nebula. The Cygnus Wall exhibits the most concentrated star formations in the nebula.

Trifolium - The Beautiful Trifid - wider ..

The "Soap Bubble Nebula" is the common name for the planetary nebula PN G75.5+1.7. This nebula was only discovered by amateur astronomer Dave Jurasevich on July 6th, 2008. It was independently confirmed and reported by Keith Quattrocchi and Mel Helm on July 17th, 2008.

PN G75.5+1.7 is situated in the constellation of Cygnus, very near the Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888). It is embedded in a large diffuse nebula which, in combination with its low surface magnitude, is the reason it was not discovered until recently.

NGC 6888, also known as the Crescent Nebula, is a cosmic bubble about 25 light-years across, blown by winds from its central, bright, massive star. This image uses narrow band image data that isolates light from hydrogen and oxygen atoms in the wind-blown nebula. The oxygen atoms produce the blue-green hue that seems to enshroud the detailed folds and filaments. Visible within the nebula, NGC 6888's central star is classified as a Wolf-Rayet star (WR 136). The star is shedding its outer envelope in a strong stellar wind, ejecting the equivalent of the Sun's mass every 10,000 years. The nebula's complex structures are likely the result of this strong wind interacting with material ejected in an earlier phase. Burning fuel at a prodigious rate and near the end of its stellar life this star should ultimately go out with a bang in a spectacular supernova explosion. Found in the nebula rich constellation Cygnus, NGC 6888 is about 5,000 light-years away. (source: APOD)

I decided last year that I wanted to see if I could catch this very faint nebula with my 9.2 cm refractor. I started working on imaging this in 2015, but then I only got 4 images before weather interrupted the imaging sequence. It was only now that I was able to catch more data of this region to see what would come out in the last week because we had great observing weather, but unfortunately a full moon. Last week I took for 5 days in a row images of this nebula in H-alpha, OIII and RGB. It was a good way to follow the olympics during the observing time

VdB 142 is a small dark nebula visible in the constellation Cepheus.

It locates at the core area of the large complex nebulous known as IC 1396, a few minutes of arc to the west opened the cluster associated with the nebula; despite its small size, it is highlighted by a discreet ease, because of his deep darkness and because of its shape, which has given it the nickname Elephant Trunk.
This is a LRGB composition to mark the peculiarities of the nebula

Moon Twilight at Marsala's Salt Ponds

Copyright: Dario Giannobile The Moon is setting down behind a wind mill that once served the salt ponds of Marsala. Here the salt is still produced according to an old tradition. Sea water is collected in different ponds where it is naturally evaporated. The marine salt is crystallized and then harvested by hands of men that start their job during the night, a couple of hours before the sun rise.

Some technical tips:
1) the image is a composition of different shots;
2) 18 shots for the moons;
3) one shot for the clouds and the faint halo of the brightest moons;
4) average of 4 shots for the landscape done between the astronomical and nautical dawn.

Lunar Green Segment On The Moon Setting Behind The Wind Mill

A tiny lunar green segment appeared on the moon setting behind the wind mill that once served the salt ponds of Marsala (Trapani - Sicily - Italy).

A green segment is a term invented by O’Connell to point out all the types of green flash. Later on it was not used any more but now is again utilized to indicate the formation of small arcs that come before the green flash itself.
