Outbreak of the North Temperate Belt of Jupiter
http://www.astrophotography.fr/wp/
Copyright: Jean-Luc Dauvergne / François Colas / S2P IMCCE

At the end of October, Glenn Orton discovered an outbreak in the NTB of Jupiter with IRTF. Unfortunatly the planet is very close to the Sun and still very difficult to observe.
Lat week I had the luck to go to the Pic du Midi to observe it with the 1 meter Telescope and François Colas. We obtained very good images of this phenomenon.
Jupiter was only 31" in diameter and less than 30° of the Sun ! When we took the image during day time. The Sun was 12° over the horizon.
John Rogers gave more explaination about this : "Jean-Luc Dauvergne has been producing amazing images of Jupiter with the 1-metre telescope at the Pic du Midi. Here is a labelled version of his image on Nov.2 showing various important features. NTBs plume A has definitely disappeared since colliding with dark spot 1 at the tail end of the next outbreak sector. White spot Z in the NTropZ is still white. Also of interest are the SSTB white ovals: three of them had converged very close together in August and I expect 2 or even 3 of them to merge. They have not done so yet -- the spacing is much the same as in August -- but they are now passing oval BA so this may trigger merger(s) in the coming months.
"
He put some comment on one of the images :

Antisolar

Copyrights: Stéphan Gaumont-Guay
Location: Monts Valins National Park, St-Fulgence, Canada
Website: http://www.astrobin.com/users/AstroGG/

I was alone on the highest mountain of Monts Valins National Park, in Canada, on a very cold evening of January when I witnessed these phenomena. Looking East, I saw the belt of Venus and Earth's shadow but what caught my eyes were the anticrepuscular rays converging on the antisolar point.

Three Moons on a pine needle

Art and science in one picture! I took a picture of the super Moon with my 3 inches refractor and used the image on my computer screen as a background for a macro shot of refraction caused by three dropplets on a pine needle.

Startrails over 11-meter sculpture "Hand of the Desert" in the Atacama.

The sculptor invited the people to decide that for them symbolizes this hand.
Today, 9 November. Today is the birthday of Carl Sagan. He said: science is a candle in the darkness. For me the "Hand of the Desert" also symbolizes science and human achievements. Their greatness and fragility in a hostile environment.

Details of the filaments are better visualized in an inverted image of our previous processing (http://asterisk.apod.com/download/file. ... &mode=view) followed by a brief post-processing.

In the last 2 years i collected about 30h of data of M81/82. My goal was to bring out the IFN very clear. In this version however I ignored this goal and tried to get out the most of the galaxies while keeping the background smooth.

I'm pleased to be able to produce this image of Stephan's Quintet from my 8" telescope in my San Diego backyard. This was taken over 19 hours with 741 photos stacked on top of each other to get the color and resolution you see here. Nothing fancy, just patience!
