Image 3D Lava Falls of Mars

Explanation: Get out your red/cyan glasses and gaze across lava falls of Mars. The stereo anaglyph was created by combining two images recorded by the HiRISE camera onboard Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The multi-level falls were created as flowing lava breached sections of the northern rim of a 30-kilometer diameter martian crater, located in the western part of the Red Planet's volcanic Tharsis region. As the molten lava cascaded down the crater wall and terraces to reach the crater floor it left the distinctly rough, fan-shaped flows on the steeper slopes. North is up and the breathtaking 3D view is 5 kilometers wide.

When you click on it, and look at the large full picture.... Why does it look like a man laying on his back????? complete with nose and profile, and crater for the eye...

As a person with only one working eye the 3-D images are of little value to me. I would like the possibility to link to a two dimensional picture of the original 3-d one.

I've got two eyes and they're still among my least favorite APODs. They just don't seem worth the effort, and I don't own any red/blue glasses. I guess some people love them, though. The images used to create it can be found here:

3D, sí.. y 2D el efecto en el cráter de arriba a la derecha confunde si no se ve en 3D (que yo no soy capaz de ver)
3D, yes... and 2D. effect in the crater on the right above confuses if not shown in 3D (that I am not able to see)

I much prefer the polarized 3D versions but I don't think that they can be easily implemented on LCD screens.

I don't have those glasses. View the adjacent red and blue component images cross-eyed to see the 3D perspective (with some browser magnification is better)

I, too have never seen much use in stereo imagery. I always wondered how we could expect someone to give reliable analysis if he can't simply look at an image to tell a ridge crest from a valley bottom. Photogrammetry, where you use differences in images to construct contour maps, is a whole other matter.

But its easy to sanitize them. Copy the image into a drawing program. Adjust the color balance to eliminate one of the channels. Then save the result as a gray-scale image.
