APOD: Painting with Jupiter (2018 Apr 07)

Image Painting with Jupiter

Explanation: Brush strokes of Jupiter's signature atmospheric bands and vortices form this planetary post-impressionist work of art. The creative image uses actual data from the Juno spacecraft's JunoCam. To paint on the digital canvas, a image with light and dark tones was chosen for processing and an oil-painting software filter applied. The image data was captured during perijove 10, Juno's December 16, 2017 close encounter with the solar system's ruling gas giant. At the time the spacecraft was cruising about 13,000 kilometers above northern Jovian cloud tops.

This isn't a subject that needs an artistic filter applied.

Indeed.

What is the current theory about the constituents of the atmosphere, artistic filtered or not, such that it hasn't all blended into one homogenous brew ? After billions of years, its odd that it seemingly has retained so many different colored/chemical ? bands - unless its being replenished somehow ??

I agree. Juno's images of Jupiter are quite amazing enough as they are.

I agree.. amazed by the image, then disappointed to find it wasn't actually a photo.

The APOD is a good pastiche, but is it science?

Jupiter by Juno.
Jupiter by Juno.

Jupiter is beautiful enough in itself.

"... a image with light and dark...." to whoever wrote the caption, "an image," not "a image." Proper usage aside, "a" before a vowel creates a pause, interrupting the flow of the words.

I remember years ago, someone ordering a brooch of diamonds (of appropriate sizes, for different magnitude stars) arranged to represent a certain constellation. The fabricator thought the arrangement was not artistic and "improved" it drastically!

Those are incredible images, Ann. "Jupiter by Juno." -- nice.

On a pure measure of complexity, the cloud swirls on Jupiter must be more complex than the patterns of neural activity in a human brain.

Nice looking. It kinda reminded me of the brush strokes of Van Gogh's Starry Night. But then I read that this is not a "post impressionist work of art". It is a photograph with Photoshop paint added on! Kind of makes you more appreciate the brilliance of Van Gogh or Monet, who created their masterpieces without any help from Photoshop.

I certainly agree that the original photography is beautiful, but occasionally am quite happy that it is bent to an artistic purpose; the artistry intended to give the original a slightly different texture, purely for appreciation of the subject. Almost all of the images on the APOD site do that for me - other than some of the more banal efforts, which although I would probably be overjoyed with if they were my own, can't compare to those obtained by excruciatingly expensive and technical means...!

Photoshop has come a long way as it is portraying an artist. My compliments to the artist who did the work. Viewing as a painting may have opened different perspective for those willing to 'see' differently. I like it, especially as it is still a photograph with added character.

This is not a painting any more than a photo with an unsharp mask applied to it is a painting. A computer algorithm is used to perform both such tasks.

Fortunately, this thread allows me the opportunity to share with you all a human painter who creates some astonishing works, and very recently she finished a painting of Jupiter's clouds, inspired by Juno imagery. Have a look:

lucy_west_crown_of_storms.jpg

Seán Doran created a four-part image showing some rawer Juno data that was subsequently processed into an image which was then used as reference in Lucy's painting.

Incidentally, the original painting is still for sale... but it's not cheap!
