APOD: NGC 2170: Angel Nebula Still Life (2019 Aug 26)

Image NGC 2170: Angel Nebula Still Life

Explanation: Is this a painting or a photograph? In this classic celestial still life composed with a cosmic brush, dusty nebula NGC 2170, also known as the Angel Nebula, shines near the image center. Reflecting the light of nearby hot stars, NGC 2170 is joined by other bluish reflection nebulae, a red emission region, many dark absorption nebulae, and a backdrop of colorful stars. Like the common household items that still life painters often choose for their subjects, the clouds of gas, dust, and hot stars featured here are also commonly found in this setting -- a massive, star-forming molecular cloud in the constellation of the Unicorn (Monoceros). The giant molecular cloud, Mon R2, is impressively close, estimated to be only 2,400 light-years or so away. At that distance, this canvas would be over 60 light-years across.

Don't have time to write much, but I must say that today's APOD is a truly gorgeous RGB (plus possibly other filters too) image! :D :yes: :clap:

You have to look hard to recognize NGC 2170 in other semi wide field images, but here in today’s APOD image it looks deep, busy and impressive.

Nice to see the nebulae that may get less attention than others. The Unicorn is so close to the Hunter.

It does seem to be L-RGB, per source link. No narrowband emphasis, or anything like that.

Narrowband has almost no effect on this nebula unless it is an image with a really wide field of view.

Well yeah because it's nearly all reflection or dark nebulae. However my challenge for you is to find NGC 2170 in this Ha mosaic of Orion by John Gleason.

The reddish nebulosity is almost absent in DDS imaging (3 filters: 3950–5400, 6300–6900, 6950–9000 Å), which has a few wavelength gaps that I guess is significant to that dust.

Interesting. The reddish nebulosity should be well visible in the interval 6300–6900 Å. Presumably the Hα emission is so faint that it either takes an Hα filter to see it, or else you must process the image so that you enhance the red channel.

Starsurfer, noooo! I meant to say that NGC 2170 was in the lower right part of the image (at 5 o'clock), but I happened to write 7 o'clock. Honestly!!!
