a small icon in the corner of appropriate APOD pictures which indicates the relative size of the subject matter as it relates to, let's say, our solar system...

this way we get a better idea of what we are looking at...

while this may be good idea, in my short experience they never respond to a public demand.

Although a great idea, it would be very difficult to achieve as much of what we see would be at a scale where our solar system wouldn't even be the size of a pixel.

You could use the Galaxy then, but without a breakdown of scale (through a link or something) this wouldn't mean a lot to a lot of people.

Plus most of the pictures also have foreground and background objects, which could be confusing with a scale picture.

It would be interesting, but I would rather not see something like that, maybe as a text part of the page though..
And fighting time, so hard I pray that this moment lasts forever.
And will the world stay standing still, at least for me.
Through my eyes stare into me, I bear my heart for all to see
With my face turned to the sun there ever standing still.

I prefer text clues as well. Many of the star images have a sentence like " This image spans xx lightyears across and is yy light years away near zz". This works for me. A lot of times the extra links get you a ton more detail - I end up with information overload.
